Thus, it is of interest tocompare muscle and bone characteristicsof patients at different stages of diseaseprogression: localised prostate cancer(LPC) versus metastatic prostate cancer(MPC).Methods: Ninety prostate cancer patientswere stratified by disease progression intolocalised (n = 50; age = 69.1 years;height = 172.7 cm; weight = 83.8 kg;PSA = 2.16 ng/mL) and metastatic(n = 40; age = 71.4 years;height = 174.1 cm; weight = 86.6 kg;PSA = 28.85 ng/mL) groups. Patientsunderwent regional DXA scans to deter-mine bone mineral content (BMC) of thespine, hip and femoral neck. Whole-bodyDXA scans were also performed to estab-lish whole-body bone mass, lean mass, fatmass and trunk fat.Results: LPC exhibited lower hip (2.9%)and waist (6.4%) circumferences thanMPC. Further, LPC contained lower rela-tive whole-body fat mass (21%) and trunkfat (14%) and higher relative whole-bodylean mass (8.7%) than MPC. RelativeBMC was higher in LPC for whole-body(3.1%), hip (6.1%) and femoral neck(3.5%) regions; yet higher in MPC forrelative spinal BMC (4.2%) potentially dueto bone metastatic lesions in the lumbarspine for this group.Conclusions: Considerable musculoskele-tal deterioration simultaneous with largeincrements in total body and trunk fatcommensurate with disease progressionprovides support for the use of exerciseto promote muscle-bone preservation andfat reduction across the diseaseprogression.56 © 2015 The AuthorsBJU International © 2015 BJU International | 116, Supplement 1, 50--5756 Nursing & Allied Health
