Abstract

Video recordings of lecture given by Professor Catford on the occasion of his retirement from the University of Michigan Linguistics Department, in a series called 'The Catford Lectures'. The subject of the lectures was Professor Catford's life in linguistics. The lectures were introduced by Linguistics Professor Alton Becker and are a linguistic autobiography. In the fifth lecture, from March 14, 1985, Catford discusses how, after 1946, he returned to Britain, studying under the linguist J.R. Firth at London University in the School of Oriental and African Studies.
