Juni 2008  3   4 Abstract This work describes the linking of the two concepts ‘photochromism’ and ‘organic light-emitting diode’ (OLED). Photochromism is the light-induced interconversion of a molecule between two isomers that differ in their physical properties, such as HOMO and LUMO energies and absorption spectra. An OLED consists of an organic semiconducting layer (~100 nm) sandwiched between two electrodes, transforming current into light. Upon operation of the OLED, electrons are injected at the cathode into the LUMO of the organic material; holes (i.e. defect electrons) are injected at the anode into the HOMO of the organic material. Electrons and holes migrate under the influence of the electric field through the semiconductor and recombine. Thus, excitons form that decay radiatively to the ground state. Thereby, the color of the emitted light is determined by the HOMO-LUMO gap of the organic semiconductor. The main result of this work is a photoswitchable OLED with the following layout: glass/ ITO (135 nm)/ PEDOT:PSS (35 nm)/ X2Q (8 nm)/ X2M (8 nm)/ XDTE (40 nm)/ B (70 nm)/ Ba (4 nm)/ Al (150 nm). PEDOT:PSS covered ITO is a transparent anode with low work function. The high work function metal barium serves as cathode; the aluminium protects the barium. The different work functions of the electrodes are important to reduce the injection barriers, such that the holes and the electrons can be injected into the HOMO and the LUMO of the organic layer, respectively. The blue-electroluminescent poly(spirobifluorene) B represents the light-emitting layer of the OLED. XDTE, a crosslinkable dithienylethene, is the novel photochromic material that was designed and synthesized during this work. The outstanding photochromic properties of dithienylethenes have been extensively studied in the past two decades and are typical for XDTE as well. UV irradiation transforms an open-ring isomer into a closed-ring isomer. Irradiation with visible light induces the reverse reaction. For a thermal reaction the activation barrier between the two isomers is normally too large (thermal bistability). The switching can be repeated many times (cyclability). X2Q and X2M are members of the large family of XTPDs, i.e. crosslinkable derivatives of the holeconductor triphenylamine dimer (TPD). The synthesis, characterization and application of XTPDs represents a separate part of this thesis (see below). All XTPDs and the XDTE contain oxetane functions which allows for photoinitiated crosslinking of the thin films by cationic ring-opening polymerization (CROP). Spin-coating, followed by crosslinking polymerization – before the next layer is coated – is a versatile strategy to fabricate multilayer OLEDs by a solution-process. The different HOMO energies of the ring-open isomer (EHOMO = −6.0 eV) and the ring-closed isomer (EHOMO = −5.42 eV) of the XDTE define the OFF state and the ON state of the OLED,  5 respectively. The dithienyl units in the crosslinked XDTE remain flexible enough to allow for switching between 0% and the PSS of around 90% closed-ring states. By irradiation with UV light (< 350 nm; OFF → ON) and visible light (500–700 nm; ON → OFF), respectively, the luminance and the current density of the photoswitchable OLED can be controlled over three  orders of magnitude. The difference of the largest hole injection barriers Φh,max in the OFF and the ON state ( ONhOFFh max,max, Φ−Φ ), respectively, is identified as a key parameter to achieve  large ON/OFF ratios. The two XTPDs, X2Q and X2M, minimize ONh max,Φ  and maximize  OFFh max,Φ . Furthermore, XTPD acts as a wetting compatibilizer, such that XDTE forms  homogeneous films. In the ON state, the photoswitchable OLED emits deep blue light with an efficiency of 0.8 cd/A, reaching 2,000 cd/m2 at 12 V. The switching dynamics of the photoswitchable OLED are investigated by online UV/Vis spectroscopy in reflection at the metal cathode. The behavior with and without an applied voltage, under external irradiation and in the dark, respectively, are studied in detail. Finally, several applications are discussed, including the individual patterning of the OLED emissive area and a smart mini-scanner device. Furthermore, the prototype of a novel non-volatile organic memory is presented, which allows for repeated reconfiguration and non-destructive electrical and/or optical read-out of the multiple grey-levels. In a second part of this work, fifteen novel XTPDs are synthesized. The XTPD family covers now a range of HOMO energies from −5.15 to −5.90 eV. This allows to investigate and to improve the hole-injection into blue-phosphorescent emitters which are typically located at around −6 eV. The different XTPDs are also used to optimize the hole-injection in the photoswitchable OLED and to understand the consequences for the ON/OFF ratio (see above). XTPDs with identical electronic properties but different oxetane functionality (f = 1, 2 and 4) are studied in OLED model devices, revealing a complex interplay between radical cations, unreacted oxetane, radical anions and oxonium ions. Therefore, FT-IR spectroscopy in reflection at the ITO anode is introduced as a novel method to chemically analyze OLED pixels after operation. Finally, the current-initiated oxetane polymerization of XTPD is discovered, identifying transient radical cations as the initiating species.  Kurzzusammenfassung Diese Arbeit beschreibt die Verknüpfung der Konzepte ‚Photochromie’ und ‚Organische Leuchtdiode’ (OLED). Photochromie ist die licht-induzierte Umwandlung eines Moleküls zwischen zwei Isomeren, die sich in ihren physikalischen Eigenschaften unterscheiden, wie zum Beispiel den HOMO- und LUMO-Energien und den Absorptionspektren. Eine OLED  6 besteht aus einer organischen Halbleiterschicht (~100 nm) zwischen zwei Elektroden und wandelt Strom zu Licht. Beim Betrieb der OLED werden Elektronen an der Kathode in das LUMO des organischen Materials injiziert; Löcher (d. h. Defektelektronen) werden an der Anode in das HOMO des organischen Materials injiziert. Elektronen und Löcher wandern unter dem Einfluss des elektrischen Feldes durch den Halbleiter und rekombinieren. Dadurch bilden sich Exzitonen, die strahlend in den Grundzustand übergehen. Dabei wird die Farbe des emittierten Lichtes durch den HOMO-LUMO-Abstand des organischen Halbleiters bestimmt. Das Hauptergebnis dieser Arbeit ist eine photoschaltbare OLED mit folgendem Aufbau: Glas/ ITO (135 nm)/ PEDOT:PSS (35 nm)/ X2Q (8 nm)/ X2M (8 nm)/ XDTE (40 nm)/ B (70 nm)/ Ba (4 nm)/ Al (150 nm). PEDOT:PSS beschichtetes ITO ist eine transparente Anode mit niedriger Austrittsarbeit. Barium mit seiner hohen Austrittsarbeit dient als Kathode; das Aluminium schützt das Barium. Die unterschiedlichen Austrittsarbeiten der Elektroden sind wichtig, um die Injektionsbarrieren zu verkleinern, damit die Löcher in das HOMO bzw. die Elektronen in das LUMO der organischen Schicht injiziert werden können. Das blau-elektrolumineszierende Poly(spirobifluoren) B ist die licht-emittierende Schicht der OLED. XDTE, ein vernetzbares Dithienylethen, ist das neue photochrome Material, das während dieser Arbeit synthetisiert wurde. Die herausragenden photochromen Eigenschaften der Dithienylethene sind umfangreich untersucht und sind auch für XDTE typisch. UV-Bestrahlung verwandelt ein ring-offenenes Isomer in ein ring-geschlossenes Isomer. Bestrahlung mit sichtbarem Licht bewirkt die umgekehrte Reaktion. Für eine thermische Reaktion ist die Aktivierungsbarriere zwischen beiden Isomeren in der Regel zu hoch (thermische Bistabilität). Das Schalten kann vielfach wiederholt werden („cyclability“). X2Q und X2M gehören zur großen Familie der XTPDs, d.h. vernetzbarer Derivate des Lochleiters Triphenylamindimer (TPD). Die Synthese, Charakterisierung und Anwendung der XTPDs bildet einen separaten Teil dieser Arbeit (siehe unten). Alle XTPDs und das XDTE enthalten Oxetan-Funtionen, die eine photoinitiierte Vernetzung der dünnen Filme durch kationische Ringöffnungs-Polymerisation (CROP) ermöglichen. „Spin-coating“, gefolgt von einer Vernetzungs-Polymerisation – bevor die jeweils nächste Schicht aufgetragen wird – ist eine vielseitige Strategie zur Herstellung von aus Lösung prozessierten Multischicht-OLEDs. Die unterschiedlichen HOMO-Energien des ring-offenenen Isomers (EHOMO = −6.0 eV) und des ring-geschlossenen Isomers (EHOMO = −5.42 eV) von XDTE definieren einen ON- bzw. einen OFF-Zustand der OLED. Die Diethienyl-Einheiten in dem vernetzten XDTE bleiben beweglich genug, so dass sie zwischen 0% und einem PSS von etwa 90% geschlossenen Zuständen geschaltet werden können. Durch die Bestrahlung mit UV-Licht (< 350 nm; OFF → ON) bzw. sichtbarem Licht (500–700 nm; ON → OFF) kann die Helligkeit und die  7 Stromdichte der photoschaltbaren OLED über einen Bereich von drei Größenordnungen kontrolliert werden. Der Unterschied der größten Lochinjektionsbarrieren Φh,max im OFF- bzw. im ON-Zustand ( ONhOFFh max,max, Φ−Φ ) wurde als Schlüsselparameter für große ON/OFF-Verhältnisse identifiziert. Die zwei XTPDs, X2Q und X2M, minimieren ONh max,Φ  und maximieren OFFh max,Φ . Außerdem wirkt XTPD als Benetzungsvermittler, so dass das XDTE homogene Filme bildet. Im ON-Zustand emittiert die photoschaltbare OLED tiefblaues Licht mit einer Effizienz von 0.8 cd/A und erreicht bei 12 V eine Leuchtdichte von 2,000 cd/m2. Das Schaltverhalten der OLED wird mit online-UV/Vis-Spektroskopie in Reflexion an der Metallkathode untersucht. Dabei wird das Verhalten mit und ohne angelegte Spannung, unter Bestrahlung bzw. im Dunkeln im Detail analysiert. Schließlich werden mehrere Anwendungen diskutiert, u. a. die individuelle Gestaltung der OLED-Leuchtfläche und ein „Smart-Mini-Scanner“. Darüberhinaus wird der Prototyp eines neuartigen nicht-volatilen organischen Speichers präsentiert, dessen multiple Graustufen vielfach umprogrammiert und zerstörungsfrei elektrisch und/oder optisch ausgelesen werden können. In einem zweiten Teil dieser Arbeit, werden fünfzehn neue XTPDs synthetisiert. Die XTPD-Familie deckt jetzt ein Bereich von HOMO-Energien zwischen −5.15 und −5.9 eV ab. Das erlaubt, die Lochinjektion in blau-phosphoreszierende Emitter zu untersuchen und zu verbessern, deren HOMO-Niveaus typischerweise bei etwa −6 eV liegen. Die verschiedenen XTPDs werden auch eingesetzt, um die Lochinjektion in der photoschaltbaren OLED (siehe oben) zu optimieren und besser zu verstehen. XTPDs mit identischen elektronischen Eigenschaften, aber unterschiedlicher Oxetan-Funktionalität (f = 1, 2 and 4) werden in OLED-Modell-Bauteilen untersucht und enthüllen dabei ein komplexes Zusammenspiel von Radikalkationen, unreagiertem Oxetan, Radikalanionen und Oxoniumionen. Dabei wird FT-IR-Spektroskopie in Reflexion an der ITO-Anode als neue Methode eingeführt, um OLED-Pixel nach dem Betrieb chemisch zu analysieren. Schließlich wird die strom-iniierte Oxetan-Polymerisation von XTPD entdeckt, wobei transiente Radikalkationen die initiierende Spezies sind.
