It presents the context of creation of an Institutional Repository for the Historical Collection of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Sao Paulo (FMVZ / USP). It shows the importance of gathering, sorting, and providing the various materials that tell the history of the Institution. It presents the criteria used for selection of the software Dspace - which enabled the project -, as well as their functionality. It explains aspects of customization, which includes the definition of communities and subcommunities, and metadata specific to each type of material that make up the collections of the FMVZ / USP's repository. It intends, with discussions and descriptions of work, contribute to the development of similar projects
