The Hot Spring Water System in Beppu in view of Two Chemical Elements

Abstract

Of all hot springs in Beppu, temperature and Cl', HCO3' contents were measured in summer 1950, from which their new distributions are obtained and compared with those of the past. There are found the rations HCO3/Cl and (Temp. -16)/Cl of each hot springs have linear relations as in Fig. 3, which suggests the water systems forming Beppu Hot Springs as follows. In the central region of the old city, two hot water systems and cold one mix. In the southern region near the sea, above-mentioned water systems are contaminated with consikerable amounts of sea water. In the northern region, one of the hot water systems differs in its character from those in other areas. In Kamegawa district, the distributions of Cl and HCO3 ions have not so changed in the last seven years
