The [members of the] congregation of the Lord at Graafschap, being part of the Holland colony in Michigan, find themselves without a shepherd and pastor. It is a great need. They cannot go without, not without great harm. The congregation is compelled to look for that costly gift in order to build up and perfect the saints, which is promised by the Lord to his church. In these prayerful efforts the congregation had an election for a pastor and the vote cast was in your favor. It therefore becomes our duty as members and leaders of the flock to acquaint you of this call - made in God's house - and to lay this call upon your shoulders, with the earnest prayer that the Lord will incline your heart to leave the fatherland and to be willing to serve this part of the flock in a strange land. By this call, we dare to take an important step. But, at the same time, we are convinced that for us no way is open to fulfill our need other than the one we see open to us in the Netherlands. May God bind upon your heart the need of this flock. You received 32 of 43 votes cast. The congregation consists of 51 families and is growing. The parsonage is ready, five acres of cleared land surround it, which we will make ready for you. [2] Moreover to us it is an actively supported call, to which we, and the entire congregation, are bound voluntarily to support you and your family in such a manner that you may have a living above that of the congregation. We cannot fix upon a certain amount of money because, on account of the condition of the settlement, we must support your family for the greater part by supplies from the store and other living necessities. The consistory will take care of order and stability, namely, that the pastor will not experience harm from ill-disposed folk who will pull out (if ever such should arise unexpectedly). Our location is south-west of the settlement of Holland. We extend this call to you with much freedom, not only because of the need of the congregation, but also in connection with the needs of the entire Dutch settlement which by God's grace was planted here, believing that there is more urgent need here than in any part of the Netherlands.
