This book is not designed to be acomprehensive reference book and covers mostly the basicdiagnosis and management of acute and chronic sportsinjuries. The chapters are clear, and the information in eachchapter is well presented and easy to read. All the basic factsare included in the content in each chapter. There are amplecolour illustrations and photographs to make the text visuallyappealing. Most of the chapters contain up to date references,which is always an important consideration in any text.The one deficiency of the book is that it deals mainly withinjuries and not with the broader aspects of sports medicine.The conditions that occur in athletes are not covered very well,and the use of physical exercise in the rehabilitation of chronicdisease states is totally deficient in this book. It is therefore anideal text for the medical practitioner wishing to be introducedto sports medicine and to serve mainly as a team physician.The serious postgraduate student in sports medicine would notfind the material comprehensive enough.Martin SchwellnusIN MEMORIAMBERTRAM BERNSTEINMy friend Bertie Bernstein, former head of the Department oftolaryngology at the Johannesburg General Hospital andTransvaal Memorial Hospital for Children and at one timedoyen of ENT surgery in Johannesburg, died in Houston Texasat age 91 on 27 January, two months after a fall and subsequenthip replacement.He practised in partnership with Monty Jackson and CharlieAronson in Johannesburg for many years before emigrating toIsrael in 1962. There he worked at the Kaplan Hospital inRehovot for the next 17 years. In 1980 he moved the USA,settling first in Florida and later in Houston to be closer to hisfamily.Bertie was a remarkable man. Tall and erect, distinguishedand handsome, he stood out in a crowd. He possessed a superbintellect, was refined and cultured with widespread eclecticinterests ranging through history, politics, current events, sportand classical music. He was widely read and possessed aphenomenal memory. Young at heart, he was a good listenerand a great raconteur. Although retired for 20 years, heremained incredibly well informed about his own specialty andgeneral medical advances. Material things and money were ~unimportant; his main loves were family, his golf and hisfriends.Occasional idiosyncracies made him all the more human. Heloved to tell the story of how a high-powered little sports caronce roared past him up hospital hill and he decided there andthen that he needed to drive one of those, whatever it was.
