Just an episode? Considerations for the research on former boarding school students and the relevance of the boarding school attendance

Abstract

Während Internatsgymnasien in Deutschland im öffentlichen Diskurs wiederholt als Stätten von Elitebildung thematisiert werden, ist bislang kaum etwas über die tatsächliche internatsschulische Sozialisation und ihre Bedeutung für die nachschulischen Biografie- und Berufsverläufe der Ehemaligen bekannt. Davon ausgehend werden Forschungsfragen entwickelt, um die biografische Bedeutung des Internatsbesuchs, die Selbstentwürfe und die Lebensverläufe von ehemaligen Internatsschülerinnen und -schülern zu untersuchen. Im Zuge dessen werden zudem Internatsgymnasien theoretisch-konzeptionell dimensioniert, theoretische Schlüsselkonzepte zur Untersuchung der Bildungs- und Berufsbiografien von ehemaligen Internatsgymnasiastinnen und -gymnasiasten dargestellt und heuristische Annahmen formuliert. (DIPF/Orig.)While boarding schools in Germany are repetitively discussed as sites of elite education in public discourses, little is known about the actual boarding school socialisation, its significance for the post-school biography, and careers of former students, so far. Drawing on this desiderate, research questions are developed to examine the biographical relevance of the boarding school attendance, the self-concepts and the trajectories of former boarding school students. In the course of this, boarding schools are dimensioned theoretically and conceptually as socialisation places. Furthermore, key theoretical concepts for the study of the educational and occupational biographies of former boarding school students are presented. Based on both, heuristic assumptions are posed.
