Abstract
After analyzing 31 shark attacks incidents in panamanian waters that included 43 people from 1883 to 1995, it looks like these attacks happens year long in the Pacific (16), the Caribbean (14) and the Panama Canal (1); the majority of the reports appear to be in the central and eastern regions of Panama. Fourtyfour percent of the attacks (19) were fatal, ninety-three percent (40) were non provoqued and in the majority of the cases studied there were no positive identification of the aggressor, however there´s evidence of attacks from white, bull, hammer, white tip and grey sharks. The activities performed during the attacks were swimming, shipwrecks and spear fishing (primarily for lobster). This activity represents from 1989 up to date the greatest percentage (75%) of the reported attacks. Finally, 31 incidents in 112 years (0.28 per year) indicate a very low possibility of a shark attack in Panamanian waters. Luego de analizar 31 incidentes, en los cuales se documentaron ataques de tiburones ocurridos en aguas panameñas, que involucraron a 43 personas desde 1883 hasta 1995, se concluye que los mismos se producen a través de todos los meses del año, tanto en el Pacífico (16), Caribe (14) y el Canal de Panamá (1), localizándose mayormente hacia el área central y este de Panamá. De éstos, el 44% (19) resultó fatal, el 93% (40) de los mismos fueron no provocados y en su mayoría no se pudo identificar al agresor. Sin embargo, se cuenta con evidencia de ataques producidos por tiburones: blanco, toro, martillo, punta blanco, gata y gris, en nuestro país. Las actividades desarrolladas durante el ataque mayoritariamente fueron: natación, naufragios y cacería submarina (principalmente de langostas), esta última, presenta el mayor porcentaje (75%) de los ataques reportados desde 1989 al presente. Finalmente, 31 incidentes en 112 años (0.28 por año) nos indican que las probabilidades de los mismos es relativamente baja en aguas panameñas.
