The article summarizes the objectives and recent results of a research project on com-mented translation into Russian of ecclesiastical novellae issued by Byzantine emperors of the5th–10th centuries. Supported by the administration of the Saint-Tikhon OrthodoxUniversity of Humanities (Moscow), the project is primarily dealing with novellaeofTheodosius II (408–450), Justinian I (527–565) and Leo VI the Wise (886–912). The impor-tance of a modern Russian translation results from the poor state of research in the field ofByzantine imperial legislation on ecclesiastical affairs. As an interim achievement the 6thnovella of Justinian, which became famous for the first formulation of the «symphony»between Church and state, is published here in Russian translation with a commentary
