Víctor Huertas explored the trophic ecology of cnidarian-feeding labrids to understand how these fishes overcome the difficulties associated with a diet of corals or jellyfish. He described the evolution of two highly modified oral jaw structures that confers an extraordinary ability to secrete mucus which enables fishes to exploit this unusual diet.
