Nature is a great source of inspiration for the development of engineering systems. The
locomotion of animals by the flapping of their wings is a process perfected over millions of
years. The study of the oscillating airfoils becomes essential, in order to perceive the
optimized movement of these animals in a complex and unsteady aerodynamic
environment. Thus, in this dissertation the aerodynamic phenomena present in the wake
and surface of three flat plates with different thicknesses and shapes of the trailing edge,
subjected to a plunging movement, were visualized for three Reynolds numbers. Besides the
influence of the different thicknesses and geometries of the trailing edge, it is intended to
analyze the influence of the Reynolds number, the Strouhal number, the reduced frequency,
the adimensional amplitude and the maximum effective angle of attack on the thrust
production and the formation of leading edge vortices (LEV). The results obtained present
a good agreement with previous works since it is in the 0.1 to 0.2 range Strouhal that the
largest number of trust production and LEV convection occur. There are also cases in which
the LEV remains attached to the wing during the ascending/descending movement,
originating energy extraction. The obvious influence of thickness on the aerodynamic
phenomena visualized is observed. On the contrary, the different shapes of the trailing edge
do not produce distinct results. The detection of deflection of the airfoils for frequencies
greater than or equal to 3 Hz was not mentioned in the previous works but generated very
interesting results which are not addressed in the literature, like the observation of a double
von Kármán vortex street
