This article aims to contribute to a better understanding of the situation, the functioning and the problems of the spaces that are on the margins of urban transformations, here called “extreme spaces” (in the double sense of being located at the margin and on the margins of urban renewal). A theoretical journey through critical urban theory is traced, combining elements of Marxist urban theory and postcolonial theory. These insights are then contrasted with the outcomes of our fieldwork in urban margins both in the center and in the periphery of Barcelona.Este artículo tiene como objetivo contribuir a una mejor comprensión de la situación, el funcionamiento y la problemática de los espacios que se hallan en los márgenes de las transformaciones urbanas, aquí denominados “espacios extremos” por estar en el margen y al margen de dichas transformaciones. Se traza un recorrido teórico por la teoría urbana crítica combinando elementos de la teoría urbana marxista y de la teoría postcolonial, y se contrasta con los resultados de la observación en márgenes urbanos tanto del centro como de la periferia barcelonesa
