Doing Science—Doing Gender. The Making and the Unmaking of Scientists

Abstract

Reasons for the marginalization of women in science cannot exclusively be found in the abstract sphere of cultural dispositions, but also in the concrete everyday practice of science itself. In her dissertation the author uses Pierre BOURDIEU's concept of the "scientific field" and empirical constructivist methods to examine the mechanisms responsible for successive and systematic exclusion of women from science particularly at higher levels of the career ladder in universities.
