Abstract

n this study, we develop some considerations about language teaching in the 1950s. To this end, we did a study on a chapter, in particular, called “Aspectos do ensino da língua”, from the work Introdução ao Estudo da Filologia Portuguêsa, 1st edition, 1956, by Serafim da Silva Neto. Our interest is the conception of language teaching that permeates the scientific discourse that circulated in academia in the mid-1950s. This time window was delimited because it precedes the institutionalization of linguistics as a discipline within academia, as well as being a period in which there is not a prestige of the traditional grammatical knowledge
