The intra family conflicts of the house of los Vélez (1546-1567)

Abstract

Este trabajo analiza la conflictividad intrafamiliar de la aristocracia hispánica durante la Edad Moderna. Partiendo del ejemplo del linaje Fajardo se estudian los orígenes, desarrollo y con - secuencias de unos pleitos que enfrentaron al II marqués de los Vélez con su madrastra, hermanos y primas. Estos conflictos informan acerca de la organización interna de la casa, las tensiones que surgen a la hora de repartir herencia y deudas familiares, y la importancia de los tribunales regios para solucionar disputas que, en algunos casos, se prolongan durante años. En este caso no se pleitea por el mayorazgo familiar, sino por los derechos a obtener las dotes para contraer nupcias o ingresar en un convento, así como los alimentos para el sustento de los hijos segundonesThis work discusses the intra family conflicts within the Spanish aristocracy during the Early Modern Age. Using the example of Fajardo lineage studies the origins, development and consequences of several lawsuits faced by the second Marquis of los Vélez with her stepmother, brothers and cousins. These disputes report about the internal organization of the house, the tensions that arise when distributing the inheritance and family debts, and the importance of royal courts to resolve conflicts which, in some cases, drag on for years.
