no contexto do Ensino Superior.
finalidade. The study "Reciprocal images of Portuguese and Turkish university students: for
an intercultural mediation between Portugal and Turkey" is primarily instituted as a
study of Images of Languages and Cultures within the field of Language Didactics
(LD). On a comparative basis, it focuses on two groups of students, in two
different countries, within and outside the EU, respectively Portugal and Turkey,
who are learning the language of their counterpart in the context of higher
education. Within the framework of intercultural pragmatics, the study’s main
objective is to contribute to establishing closer ties between the two countries and
peoples by unveiling clues leading, within the specific context of Foreign
Languages and Cultures Education (FLCE), to the development of the students’
Intercultural Competence (IC), and to the positive (re/de)construction of their
images vis à vis their counterpart, which are taken as mutual implicated abilities.
Adopting, within the scope of the emergent paradigms, in both epistemologicalconceptual,
and empirical/methodological terms, an eminently transdisciplinary
positioning (that of LD scientific field), we developed a Multiple Case Study, which
involved 67 students from the University of Ankara and 24 students from the
Universities of Lisbon and Oporto. On the basis of the treatment and analysis (of
an essentially qualitative nature) of the data collected through the application of
two different data collection instruments – a questionnaire survey and focus group
sessions –, we proceeded to a diagnosis of the reciprocal images of the students
involved. As such we attempted to unveil how these images were structured and
their possible sources, dynamics and functions, as well as to highlight their potential
implications for the learning of the target language-culture and the development of
intercultural communication and relationship with their counterpart.
The results point to the fact that, although similar in terms of their reciprocal lack
of knowledge about each other’s country and people, the two groups of students
showed a rather distinct image construct vis-à-vis their counterpart: the Turkish
students present an eminently positive image of the Portuguese, denoting, above
all, a focus on similarities and a valuation of diversity. The Portuguese people
were regarded as an image in the mirror that, although distinct from them, was
much equated with them (which may, however, lead these students to neglect the
importance of the development of IC in the deepening of the relationship with their
counterpart). The Portuguese students present, within the scope of this mirroring
effect, a certain sense of image distortion, denoting a greater focus on differences,
which is linked to the influence of negative stereotypes regarding Islam.
The conclusions of the study point to the clear need to make efforts to promote the
IC of the students of both countries in order to provide them with the necessary
means to become effective intercultural speakers and mediators, prepared to
contribute to the rapprochement, (re)cognition and mutual understanding of the
countries, cultures, peoples and religions involved. In this context, we suggest, at
the end of the study, a set of lines of action, of a general nature, that could be
developed in the context of FLCE in pursuit of this purpose
