Poor family management as a risk factor for behavioral problems

Abstract

Dosadašnja teorijska i empirijska saznanja o etiologiji problema ponašanja ukazuju na različite faktore porodičnog funkcionisanja kao značajne za nasta- nak i razvoj problema u detinjstvu i adolescenciji. Jedan od njih predstavljaju problemi organizovanja porodičnog života, koji obuhvataju grubo i nedo- sledno disciplinovanje uz nepostojanje jasnih pravila ponašanja, nizak nivo roditeljske kontrole i supervizije i nizak nivo pozitivnog angažovanja roditelja. Problemi organizovanja porodičnog života svoje efekte ostvaruju u smanjenju kvaliteta svakodnevnih interakcija roditelj-dete, te kreiraju at- mosferu koja pogoduje razvoju problema ponašanja. Brojne istraživačke studije bave se vezom između roditeljskih veština koje su značajne za organizovanje porodičnog života i razvoja problema ponašanja kod deteta, ispitujući raz- ličite aspekte odnosa između ovih konstrukata. U radu su prikazani problemi organizovanja porodičnog života, kao rizični faktor problema ponašanja, uz istorijsku i istraživačku prizmu njegovog izučavanja, sa posebnim fokusom na analizu veza između problema ponašanja i roditeljskih veština koje obuhvata ovaj rizični faktor.The previous theoretical and empirical knowledge of the etiology of behavioral problems point to various factors of family functioning as important for the emergence and development of problems in childhood and adolescence. One of them is poor family management, which includes coarse and inconsistent discipline, with no clear rules of behavior, low level of parental control and supervision, and a low level of positive engagement of parents. Poor family management accomplishes its effects in reducing the quality of everyday parent-child interaction and creating an atmosphere that suits the development of behavioral problems. Numerous research studies deal with the relationship between parental skills that are important for family management and the development of child’s behavioral problems, examining the various aspects of the relationship between these constructs. This paper presents poor family management as a risk factor for behavioral problems, along with the historical and research prism of its studying, with a particular focus on analyzing the relationship between behavioral problems and parental skills that encompasses this risk factor
