BACKGROUND: 

Mothers who are overweight or obese during pregnancy and delivery, as indicated by an increase in maternal BMI, are known to have an increased risk of prenatal, intrapartum, postpartum, and neonatal problems such as preeclampsia, raised blood pressure, macrosomia, and caesarean section etc. Hence this study is designed with a goal to study the maternal and fetal outcome in overweight and obese pregnant women. 

OBJECTIVES:

1. To study the prevalence of Over weight and obese pregnant women.

2. To study the maternal risk factors present during pregnancy and labour.

3. To study the fetal and neonatal complications.

MATERIAL AND METHODS: 

This is a Cross-sectional study conducted among overweight and obese antenatal subjects for the period of one year in Department of OBG, GVMCH. Participants with BMI > 25 kg/m2 during the antenatal visit using pre pregnancy weight and height either self-reported or from prenatal records were included in the study. Maternal characteristics, maternal outcomes and neonatal outcomes were assessed. 

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: 

In our study, majority of the participants, belong to the age group of 21-30 years. Mostly of cases occur in the age group between 21- 30 years. Two-third of gestational diabetics belong to the obesity group whereas one-third belong to the overweight group. Two-third (75%) of the obese participants and one-third of the overweight participants were presented with eclampsia. Majority of the subjects who had full term are overweight group when compared with obese group which had two-third of term deliveries. The birthweight of the neonate is decreasing with the increase in BMI of the mothers. Also other parameters such as failure of induction and still birth are high among the overweight.  

CONCLUSION: 

Having shed a light upon the effect of obesity in pregnancy related outcomes, studies with the larger sample size and trials to highlight the effectiveness of interventions in reducing or preventing the obesity among women is recommended
