Louis, June 30th, 1816 You are requested by the Coumiasioners, to lose no time in giving information to the Chiefs of the Big & Little Osages, that their dif-ferences with the Cherokees have been made known to the President, who is much ~leased with their oonduct in regard to that subject; and has authorized them to use their endeavours to have everything between them and the Cherokees speedily and satisfactorily adjusted. For that purpose arrangements are now making, to have the line of the Osage purchase seen & marked; and it is expected that the Surveyor General will be at Fire Prairie, ready to commence the line on or about the 1st day of August, at whioh time & place it wished, that the Osages (in compliance with the Treaty between them and the United States) would send forward their commissioners to attend him, if they choose to do so. When once the line is run, it will be known whether the Cherokees are settled upon the lands of the Osages or not, and what measures (if any) it may be necessary for the Government to adopt, in order to settle their disputes. The Chiefs of both nations, will have of course to meet the Commissioners in council at this place, and you are requested to in-form the Osage Chiefs that they would be glad to see a deputation of them in st. Louis on or about the 1st of October; by which time it is expected that the Cherokee Chiefs will be up.- This information will be forwarded to the Osages by expresses direct, but for fear of accidents & to render surety doubly sure, it has been deemed advisable to request you to cause it to be communicated also.
