Home automation system for energy management through power lines

Abstract

Home Automation System connects household appliances together on a network so that it can be automatically or manually controlled using a common interface and can react with each other. Interconnection between these devices can either be through wires (phone lines, power-lines) or through radio waves. The thesis is to implement a microcontroller-based home automation system for energy management through power lines. The system will be applied to an energy management scheme that controls the consumption of the selected appliances. The system is basically composed of the main controller and PLC modems which are connected via the existing power lines and appliance controller where appliances are connected. The user just keys in the maximum desired consumption for the month, and the system will function by itself. An alarm will be integrated on the main controller to notify the priority settings. The user has an option to disable or reset the system. With the said thesis, people will have the capacity to regulate one\u27s desire electric consumption every month, thus one will be able to cut down expenses. Lower consumption provides low heat dissipation which decreases energy use therefore, friendly to the environment. Also, the said system will provide more convenience to the users because it will automatically do the tasks depending to the user\u27s own personal preferences
