Dette speciale tager som udgangspunkt i spørgsmålet om, hvorvidt nutidens kulturelle praksis understøtter, eller hæmmer processen for sorgen. Dermed søger det at undersøge forholdet mellem sorg og dets sociokulturelle kontekst. Den empiriske del af afhandlingen er baseret på personlige interviews, med sørgende individer, interviews med sørgende, og to sessioner inden for en sorggruppe organiserede af præster. For at analysere vores empiriske fund udnytter vi sociologiske teorier, der knytter psykologisk sygdom og følelsesmæssig stress og samfunds imperativer. Der foretages en historisk analyse af de kulturelle forståelser om sorg og død i Europa. Dets resultater afslører et socialt klima, hvor de berøvede er konfronteret med yderligere problemer og tab. Dette føjer til de følelsesmæssige problemer af tab. Dette er primært isolation, fremmedgørelse og stigma. Således får de sørgende ekstra sociale, og eksistentielle tab i tillæg til deres sorg. Dette sker som et resultat af en kultur, der udelukkende er baseret på lykke, selvrealisering og præstationer.This master thesis takes, as its point of departure, the question of whether contemporary cultural practices supports, or inhibits the process of bereavement. Thereby it seeks to investigates the relationship between grief and its socio-cultural context. The empirical part of the thesis is based on personal interviews of bereaved individuals, interviews with experts on bereavement, and two sessions within a group of bereaved organized by a Church community. In order to analyze its empirical findings, it utilizes sociological theories which links psychological disease, and emotional stress to the imperatives of contemporary society, and a historical analysis of the cultural conceptions of grief and death in Europe. Its findings reveals a social climate in which the bereaved is confronted with additional issues and losses, which adds to the emotional troubles of bereavement. This is primarily isolation, alienation and stigma. Thus bereaved people experience additional social, and existential losses in relation to their grief. This occurs as the imperatives of a culture which is solely based on happiness, self-realization and performance forms the social understanding, and relationships towards death and bereavement, thus bereavement end up being a subject of diagnosis and taboo
