I dette projekt hævdes det, at de kollektive immigrationspolitikker, der er udviklet af og for EU, har været med til at bidrage til udviklingen af en nationalistisk diskurs inden den nyligt dannede italienske regering. Både den supranationale karakter af EU og flygtningekrisen i 2015 var medvirkende faktorer i de diskurser, der af projektet blev identificeret i to udvalgte, taler af lederen af Femstjernebevægelsen, Luigi Di Maio og lederen af Lega Nord, Matteo Salvini. Dette projekt har til formål at forstå, hvordan det pres, som flygtningekrisen og Dublin- traktaten pålagde Italien, var en delvis årsag til, hvorfor de to viceministre, Di Maio og Salvini, valgte den meget populistiske og nationalistiske diskurs som blev identificeret i deres taler.Dublin-traktaten bliver analyseret i en dokumentanalyse som en måde at få kendskab til EU's retlige proces. Dette var også en måde, hvorpå projektet kunne få viden om EU’s holdning til håndteringen af asylansøgere og indvandrere. Dette førte til en diskursanalyse af to taler af Di Maio og Salvini. Diskussionerne i denne analyse, som var negativt ladede diskurser mod Den Europæiske Union, er blevet analyseret yderligere i en separat teoretisk analyse. Retningslinjerne i Dublin-traktaten blev sat i forhold til de nationalistiske diskurser udtrykt af vicepremierministrene, Di Maio og Salvini, som en måde at analysere, om retningslinjerne havde påvirket udfaldet af de nationalistiske tendenser i Italien. Desuden har projektet argumenteret for, at intergovernmentalismen hos EU-medlemslandene, for så vidt angår Italien, er blevet til en "selvhjælpsmekanisme" og at der som følge af flygtningekrisen i 2015 og Dublin-forordningen, blev udviklet en mere nationalistisk udenrigspolitik i Italien.In this project it is argued that collective immigration policies that have been developed by, and for, the European Union have been contributive when it comes to the development of a nationalistic and populistic discourse within part of the newly-formed Italian government. The supranational nature of the EU and the refugee crisis of 2015 were both factors in the discourses identified in speeches by the leader of the Five Star Movement, Luigi Di Maio, and the leader of The Northern League, Matteo Salvini. This project aims to understand how the pressure that the refugee crisis in 2015, and the Dublin treaty, put on Italy was an associative reason as to why the two deputy prime ministers, Di Maio and Salvini, opted for the highly populistic and nationalistic discourse like they did.Initially, as a part of the full analytical section, the Dublin treaty was analysed in a document analysis as a way to gain knowledge of the EU’s judicial process. It was also a way for the project to gain knowledge when it came to their stance on the handling of asylum seekers and immigrants. This led onto an in-depth discourse analysis of two speeches by Di Maio and Salvini. The discourses found in this analysis, which were negative discourses against the European Union, have been analysed further in a separate theoretical analysis.The guidelines in the Dublin treaty were put in relation to the nationalistic discourses expressed by the party leaders, Di Maio and Salvini, as a way to analyse whether the guidelines had influenced the outcome of nationalistic and populistic tendencies in Italy. Furthermore, the project has argued that the intergovernmentality found in the EU member states, in the case of Italy, has turned into a ‘self-help mechanism’, and at the time of the refugee crisis in 2015, Italy developed a more nationalistic stance on foreign policy
