This project focuses on national interests of great powers such as the US and Russia and through the theoretical lenses of realism and imperialism closer investigates the relation between these states and the country of Georgia. By using the method of Process Tracing, it looks at the political and economic attributes of Georgia since the breakup of the Soviet Union which involve the US and Russia and how their interests influenced the events and led to the Russian-Georgian war in 2008. The research shows that the imperialist nature of these two leading powers resulted in using other states as proxies.
