This project is about Confederate monuments, and the way in which people ascribe different meanings to them. We’ve used a handful of theories to try and figure out why one person might see a Confederate monument as a symbol of oppression, while another sees it as a proud symbol of Southern heritage. We’ve used various online articles to do our analysis, as well as a televised debate on the removal of Confederate monuments. As it is way beyond the scope of this project to try and offer an ultimate solution on the question of the monuments, we’ve instead collected and examined the different viewpoints held by those engaged in the debate. We did, however, discover that especially historians are mindful of the fact that many of the monuments were constructed at the height of the Jim Crow era, decades after the Civil War, whereas especially defenders of the Confederacy seem to overlook this fact
