This chapter examines the role of Kichwa women in relation to extractive activities in the Ecuadorian Amazon. We identify existing literature in the research field of indigenous communities in areas vulnerable to extractivism, and by doing so we conclude there is a lack of research, with focus on gender related issues in one specific tribe. Research which analyses how female empowerment and legitimization may occur in protest over extractivism as well as identify the relevant levels of legislation and the effectiveness of them. As our research dives into the case of the Kichwa Sarayaku tribe, we analyse how ecofeminism and indigenousm feminism has been used by the women to achieve empowerment and legitimization. However, our research also shows that while the community has achieved some changes with protests, there is still an implementation gap in the Ecuadorian governments inclusion and respect for the community and the Kichwa women
