Thereaction proceeds efficiently at ambient pressure in highyields.Amide moiety is an important constituent of manybiologically significant compounds'. It's synthesis isusually accomplished by treatment of either ammonia ora primary or secondary amine with an acylating agent'".Carbodiimides are frequently used as condensing agent',however, the formation of N-acylureas and carboxylicanhydrides, occurring as side reactions. Directconversion of esters to amides is potentially a usefulsynthetic operation, but the practical application of thismethod has been somewhat limited for a number ofreasons4. In general, aminolysis of esters requires hightemperature andlor long reaction periods' and the strongalkali metal' catalysts sometimes used6.9 are notcompatible with sensitive functionality. Milder catalystssuch as 2-pyridone 10 and borontribromide II have beenreported, but the generality of these reagents has notbeen tested. Some work has also appeared on the use oftin and titanium amides in this transformation'j. Butcareful scrutiny of the reaction procedure reveals someshortcomings in most of the procedures. Therefore,there is still merit in developing a catalytic procedure forthe preparation of amides using efficient and inexpensivereagents. Moreover, in recent years considerableresurgence of interest in the area of zeolite inducedorganic transformationsl3 have figured prominantly fortheir remarkable catalytic properties. Several methodsusing this catalyst, e.g. thioacetalization of carbonylcompounds, sulphoxidation of thioethers, deketalisationand oxidative cleavage of tosylhydrazones, have beeninvestigated". Herein we wish to report that zeolite-HYeffects the formation of various saturated andunsaturated amides in excellent yields under microwave..irradiationand with an extremely simple work-up, whichmakes it a reagent of practical synthetic value. Thereaction is fairly general, facile and efficient and isdevoid of any side products emanating from functionalgroups present.In a typical case, zeolite-HY was added to a mixtureof acetic acid and aniline in an Erlenmeyer flask andplaced in a commercial microwave oven operating at2450 MHz frequency and irradiated for 40 min. Thereaction mixture was allowed to attain roomtemperature, treated with methanol and filtered off.After usual work-up acetanilide [mp 114°C (lies mp114°C)] was obtained in 93% yield exclusively andthere was no evidence for the formation of any sideproducts. Similar treatment of other substrates gave thecorresponding amides 3 in 80-96% yields (Scheme I;Table I). All the compounds obtained werecharacterised by IR and IH NMR spectroscopy andfinally by comparison with authentic samples. It isinteresting to note that this reaction is not equallyeffective when carried out without using microwaveirradiation and the conversion was only 25% (in the caseof entry 1). Similarly, the reaction did not proceed at allwhen performed without zeolite-HY. The optimumresults were obtained when equimolar amounts of thesubstrates were reacted in the presence of zeolite-HYunder microwave irradiation. Furthermore, in order toshow the preparative utility of this method, it wasapplied to the synthesis of alkenamides. Thus, thereaction of crotonic acid with aniline was carried out inthe presence of zeolite-HY under microwave irradiation.After usual work-up N-phenyl-2-butenamide, mp 111-113 °C (litl6 mp 112-114 0C), was obtained in 85%yield. Also, this simpleand easily reproducible technique affords variousproducts in shorter reaction period, with excellent yieldswithout involvement of toxic and expensive material andwithout the formation of any undesirable side products,than the classical homogeneous reaction in solvents.Experimental SectionGeneral. Melting points were determined on a Buchimelting point apparatus and are uncorrected. IR spectrawere recorded in KBr discs on a Perkin-Elmer 237B IRspectrophotometer. Microanalyses were performed on aPerkin-Elmer 240C analyser. 90 MHz IH NMR spectrawere recorded at RSIC Shillong. Mass spectra wererecorded on an AEIMS 30 instrument by the electronimpact method. Solvents were dried according tostandard procedures. Light petroleum is the fractionwith boiling point 60-80 "C. All reagents were ofcommercial quality from freshly opened containers andwere purchased from Aldrich Chemical Co. and usedwithout further purification.General procedure for the preparation of saturatedand unsaturated amides: Zeolite-HY (0.5g) was addedto a mixture of acetic acid (10 mmoles, 0.6g) and aniline(IO mmoles, 0.93g) in an Erlenmeyer flask and placed inRAPID COMMUNICA nONSa commercial microwave oven operating at 2450 MHzfrequency and irradiated for 40 min. The reactionmixture was allowed to attain room temperature andtreated with methanol and filtered off. Removal ofsolvent under vacuum at water-bath temperatureafforded acetanilide (entry 1), mp 114°C (litl5 mp 1140c), in 93% yield.Similar treatment of other substrates gave thecorresponding amides 3 in 80-96% yields (cf.
