We are indebted to theoriginal Editor-in-Chief, Julio Ramirez, who had the vi-sion to create ULJRI and brought together the world’smost influential physician scientists in the field of respi-ratory infections. Indeed, we are honored to work withan outstanding editorial team, including the associateand section editors.We represent leadership from healthcare and academicmedical center facilities. Dr. Jose Bordon, MD, PhD isClinical Assistant Professor at George Washington Uni-versity Medical School in Washington, D.C. Dr. ForestArnold, DO, MSc is Associate Professor of Medicine inthe Division of Infectious Diseases, School of Medicineat the University of Louisville and Epidemiologist atUofL Health – UofL Hospital in Louisville, KY.Dr. Jose Bordon Dr. Forest ArnoldPurposeWith many important and valued systems, economicsand profits are often the driving force. Even health-care insurance and certification boards are driven bythe economics of the U.S. healthcare system to containcosts and boost profits despite their aspirations of qual-ity care and high standards. But this journal is free tosubmit to and free to read. The purpose is to dissemi-nate new knowledge worldwide from international au-thors to international readers through a peer-reviewprocess of some of the most brilliant minds in respira-tory infection research. This culminates in the applica-tion of what is learned to the improvement of care forpatients with respiratory infections.GoalsThe next aim for our journal, now at five years of age, isto be recognized by PubMed. We are currently apply-ing with feedback from both the Open Access Schol-arly Publishers Association (OASPA) and the Commit-tee on Publication Ethics (COPE) towards that goal. AsEditors-in-Chief, we have been handed a journal withgreat potential. It is our responsibility to make deci-sions to make it prosper. We intend to continue toincrease the expanding readership, while maintainingand raising the standard for scientific rigor for the jour-nal.For manuscripts of good scientific merit, but hamperedby written language issues, we are adding preview-ing editors so that the efforts of the reviewers will bemost efficient. Many publications charge for this ser-vice or make it exclusively the responsibility of the au-thor, prior to submission. To keep publishing articles ofhigh importance, we will adjust with the evolution ofrelevant topics. For example, last year, ULJRI adaptedby devoting an entire issue to COVID-19. This year, welook forward to the trends of respiratory infections re-search. As an online journal, we are an inherently mul-timedia publication, but last year we introduced a ded-icated Multimedia section to capitalize on this methodof disseminating information.
