T H E  SOCIETYT he kickoff o f the  Maine heritage fund , the Society’s m ajor capital funds campaign, was held at Portland’s B arridoff Galleries on the evening o f October 21st. To celebrate the occasion, a special exhibition, art treasures of the  maine historical society , was opened to the general public. Consisting o f twenty-eight paintings and artworks chosen for their aesthetic and docum entary value, the exhibit provided the public with a rare o p p o rtu n ity  to view and  app rec ia te  a small bu t representative sample of some o f the finer works contained within the Society's im portant collection of Maine art. A lthough many of these works have been individually displayed at large museums throughout the state, this was the first time they have been collectively shown.With the cam paign now officially underway, we are pleased to announce that Dr. Edward Y. Blewett, president em eritus o f W estbrook College, has agreed to serve as H onorary Chairm an of the maine heritage fu n d . He will be assisted by Carleton G. Lane and Richard A. Spencer. Mr. Lane, form er president o f Union M utual Life Insurance Com pany, will direct the Founders division, while Mr. Spencer, an attorney with the Portland firm of D rum m ond W oodsum Plimpton 8c MacMahon, will coordinate the Friends division. Mr. Spencer’s team captains are William E. H annum , Joan  S. Hayden, Dougald MacDonald, Jane S. Moody, and Jo tham  D.67Pierce. In  the course o f the next several months, all members and friends of the Society will be contacted and asked for their support.T he goal for the campaign has been set by the Standing Committee at $450,000, a figure we believe is both realistic and attainable. To facilitate the achievement o f this objective, a th ree -y e a r  p led g e  p e rio d  has been  implemented.In recent months, the Society has been the recipient o f several im portant gifts. In July, we received a $5,000 bequest from  the estate of the late Eva B. Southwick of Falmouth Foreside. Miss Southwick was a Life M ember and a long-time friend of the Society. T he family of Alex M. Burgess, through Dr. Samuel B. Burgess of Needham , Massachusetts, presented two reverse paintings on glass of Captain Parker and Rebecca McCobb of Phippsburg, Maine. These exquisite portraits were done in 1818 by the noted Massachusetts artist Benjamin Greenleaf. Mrs. M arguerite J. Jenkins o f W estbrook and Mrs. Eulalia Connors o f Milford, Connecticut, have presented the Society with portraits o f Joshua and Deborah A. Haskell of Topsham , Maine. Painted in 1856 by Philip Spooner H arris o f Bath, the Haskell portraits make a fine addition to the Society’s extensive portrait collection.Miss Cynthia J. M urphy has recently jo ined  the staff as library assistant. She replaces Mrs. Julieanne B. Irving who resigned in April. Miss M urphy is a 1975 graduate of South Portland High School and currently resides in South W indham.Mrs. Rae R. Brown, our m anuscript assistant since July 1977, resigned on Septem ber 18th in o rder to accept a position in the audio-visual departm ent o f F reeport High School. H er position has been filled by A rthur J. G errier o f Mexico.
