Durante el siglo XIX la enseñanza básica estaba a cargo del Estado y complementada con la intervención de la Iglesia. En los primeros años los libros que constituyeron el principal apoyo para la enseñanza fueron los catecismos como un modelo educativo heredado de la Ilustración; para la segunda mitad del siglo la publicación de libros se incrementó y dedicó al conocimiento de los estados y municipios, además de la Geografía de América o Universal; sobre todo en los últimos veinte años se editaron casi un centenar de libros. Sin embargo al no existir un programa científico mínimo, tuvieron una calidad desigual en contenido como en las imágenes que utilizaron, pero se incorporaron grabados, fotos, mapas, no todos de buena calidad, que mostraban los elementos naturales o culturales del estado, del municipio o de la ciudad que representaban. Entre los autores destacados pueden citarse Ezequiel A. Chávez (1896), y Antonio García Cubas.During the nineteenth century, the Government was in charge of basic education and it was suplemented by the intervention of the Church. In the early years the books that constituted the main support for teaching were the catechism ones, being an educational model inherited from the Enlightenment; by the second half of the century, book publication was increased and was dedicated to the knowledge of the states and municipalities, aswell American or Universal Geography; above all, for the past twenty years almost a hundred books were edited. However, with the absence of a minimun scientific program, they had an uneven quality in the content and images used, but incorporated prints, photos, maps, not all of good quality, that showed the natural or cultural elements from the state, the municipality or the city that they represented.
