Toda trayectoria profesional en el ámbito universitario se ve influida por el contexto científico e institucional de su tiempo y su lugar. El texto sintetiza la evolución como profesor e investigador de Ricardo Méndez, desde sus estudios iniciales sobre localización industrial a la propuesta de una geografía del capitalismo y de sus crisis, o las aportaciones sobre desarrollo territorial e innovación. También la influencia inicial de la geografía neopositivista, la posterior adscripción al estructuralismo marxista y la creciente importancia concedida a las aportaciones de los enfoques neoinstitucionales y relacionales.Any professional career at the university level is influenced by the scientific and institutional context in its time and its place. This paper synthesizes the evolution of Ricardo Méndez as a professor and researcher, from their initial studies on industrial location to the proposal of a geography of capitalism and its crisis, or their contributions on territorial development and innovation studies. Also the initial influence of neopositivist geography, the subsequent attachment to marxist structuralism and the increasing importance attached to the neoinstitutional and relational theories
