 The increasing shortage of donor kidneys available for transplantation combined with an ageing population has resulted in the use of expanded-criteria donor (ECD) kidneys. These kidneys are associated with an increased risk of delayed graft function, acute rejection and reduced graft survival. This paper will cover the use of ECDs and the presentation of risk to patients receiving these organs. </jats:p
