Feschieva Department of Social Medicine, Varna Parameters of physical development being a resulting sign from the influence of numerous biological and social factors serve for coll­ective characterization of definite newborn generations as well as for individual evaluation of a single person. Similarly to other indexes of population health, those for physical development undergo cer­tain dynamics and manifest differences. Bulgarian investigations of physical development of newborns cover small samples and these normatives are based on two signs or less only (except in Sepetliev's study). We demonstrated the folowing ranking of factors influencing upon newborn body weight (according to Kulback's coefficient): pregnancy duration (3,68); education (2,62); marital status (2,16) and age of the mother (1,20); parity (0,73), and gender of newborn (0,05). This is the reason for elaboration of normative groups in com­bined tables including 3 parameters according to the aforementioned factorial signs - gender of newborn, pregnancy duration, age and parity of the mother. Observation unit is presented by every newborn in the territory of Varna region in 1986 and by his mother. We used the method of Kulback's information coefficient for determination of the dependence between newborn body weight and factorial signs and the method of percentiles for elaboration of 7 normative groups for body weight based on values of Рз, Р ю , P25, P50, P75, P90, and P97. A total of 7380 newborn have been covered.According to body weight, newborn distribution is as follows: up to 2500 g - 7,15%; from 2501 till 4000 g - 85,05%, and over 4001 g - 4,80%. According to nor­matives, body weight of boys concerning corresponding percentile values is higher than that in girls expressed in newborns delivered after the 38 week (table 1). Concerning P50, body weight of new­borns of mothers aged between 25 and 29 years is highest in both boys and girls followed by that of newborns of mothers aged between 30 and 34 years. It is the lowest in newborns of mothers aged below 19 years.
