 Metaphor is a commonly used and powerful language device for expressing complex thoughts or feelings. This exploratory qualitative study examined the sources and function of metaphor in relation to death, dying and bereavement. The study involved focus group discussions and follow-up questionnaires with professionals from three different contexts (nursing, hospice and bereavement counselling), and gave rise to a number of interesting observations. The results have implications for professional carers, particularly those working in dying and bereavement contexts, in relation to facilitating the use of metaphor to enhance the quality of communication. Suggestions are made for further research. </jats:p
