 Although Oakley's (1998) seminal work on the role of social support in pregnancy is referred to frequently by midwives, the long term influence of the midwife on the family is not well evidenced. Little is really known about the impact of a midwife's care on the future health of the mother, the father, the baby or even siblings. For example, if the midwife, at birth, encourages interaction between siblings and newborn could this set the scene for reducing the level of sibling rivalry in the family? Or, if a midwife talks to parents about their role in helping each other to avoid postnatal exhaustion could this lead to a better understanding between parents? </jats:p
