For several years now, the event celebrates the artistic talents of the community. COVID has affected several facets of live theater. Students, faculty and staff adapted to the new routine of socially distanced learning and other activities. The iPulse team is pleased with the resiliency of the Lynn community during these unprecedented times. Until then, the iPulse staff would liketo wish everyone a Happy Holiday andHappy New Year.With weeks away from celebrating New Year’s Eve, Brazil’s citizens are already planning to celebrate despite the government’s warnings against big crowds.Like their beautiful beaches, Brazil is known for many things, colorful “Carnaval” traditions, particularly their parties. A time of the year that Brazilians enjoy is New Year’s Eve. “I don’t spend New Year’s Eve anywhere other than Brazil honestly,” said Sabrina Castro, Brazilian. “The vibe is the best, the parties, the music, the traditions. Everything is unbeatable.”There are many traditions regarding New Years’ in Brazil, like eating lentils for money, wearing all white at midnight, jumping seven ocean waves for good luck and others. However, the most prominent tradition is having huge parties next to the beach. Although this year, it might have seemed out of reach to have parties of that size, Brazilians are already planning and scheduling parties all around the coast. In one city only, Juquehy, multiple events are held for five days straight and tickets are already sold out. “For sure, there will be parties this year. There never goes a year without parties,” said João Lobo, a Brazilian from São Paulo. The parties have been creating a buzz amongst the younger crowd, but the older generation seems worried as the COVID-19 cases continue to rise. The government still has not allowed large gatherings or parties and will not be hosting the annual countdown at Av. Paulista in São Paulo to contain the spread of the virus. “I’m not letting my daughters go to these parties this year,” said Marco Greco, a Brazilian parent. “The government has not allowed it, so it is not safe. I don’t want to risk it.”Even though these parties are scheduled, it does not indicate that it is safe to resume having large gatherings. Arsenault took a one-year hiatus from academics to pursue a lifetime dream of being a firefighter.His first job, as a 15-year-old teenager, was to create designs for a grocery store. Before he knew it, more people started collaborating with him, so he trained the new employees. That was his first stepping stone toward teaching. And since then, he knew he wanted to become a teacher.“I don’t know why I like to help people so much. I think there’s something inside me that makes me want to help,” he said. “Maybe I don’t like to see them struggle, especially if it is in an area that I happen to be knowledgeable in. Everyone always says they want to join a gym after New Year’s, however most do not know where to start.   There are plenty of gyms to choose from in Boca Raton. They have taken the Covid very seriously and done an amazing job with putting plexiglass between all of the cardio machines and keeping their gym clean and sanitized, which is a huge priority to them,” said Debra R. from Yelp. “I have been working out with personal trainer Jess for several months and she is extremely reliable and punctual.” With several gyms in the Boca Raton area, people can get a kick start to their New Year’s resolutions.The holidays are often associated with global travel. Several airline companies, such as United Airlines and JetBlue airlines, are reconsidering social distancing approaches as this significant holiday season is only around the corner. COVID-19 did not only impact the social life of people worldwide; however, many large businesses, specifically the airline industry, lost millions of dollars in potential sales this year. As the nation started to reopen after quarantine, many airlines continued to adopt social distancing on flights where they excluded the middle seat from consumer purchasing. “Planes should still be social distancing and taking health risks more seriously,” said Jack Williams, junior.Last month, the President of JetBlue announced that it is “not sustainable” for airlines to continue to social distance anymore. In light of the upcoming holidays, flights would reopen the cabin middle seat for purchasing starting on Dec. 1. While some may believe women in film are not as talented as others, others believe being overlooked is systemic sexism.   For the longest time, the film industry has been a male-dominated playground. The mistreatment of women in the industry is not a shock to anyone. Many would say that these incidents are just simple coincidences, but there is evidence that these actions are not.   Like systemic racism, systemic sexism is a perpetuation of oppression and discrimination without necessarily any conscious intention. It interacts with racism, classism, heterosexism and other oppressions to shape the experience of individuals.  A classic example is when a movie made by a man arguably for men like the Fast & Furious franchise is called a film while a film made by a woman arguably for women like Mean Girls is called a “chick flick.”   The derogatory term “chick flick” implies that female movies should not be taken seriously compared to men’s films. No one has ever called Hot Tub Time Machine a guy flick, so why is Breakfast at Tiffany’s a “chick flick”?  Several well-known women in the film industry, such as Emma Watson, Sarah Gavron, Lexi Alexander and more, have experienced sexism on many different levels.   “I would say 99 percent of women working in film and television industries have experienced sexism,” said Film Director Lexi Alexander to The Guardian. “I can list endless examples, from the driver refusing to take me because he was told to wait for the director to the executives who insist they need a male director for a film about boxing and fighting, then hire a guy who never fought for his life, while I spent the better part of my youth being an international competitive fight champion.”   This goes without saying that plenty of female directors have missed out on many opportunities due to male actors not wanting to work with them simply because they are women.  Last year women made up 10.6 percent of directors of the top 100 grossing movies. Thirty-two percent of the Academy’s members are women, with 16 percent of color women still not getting nominated or winning.  According to the Centre for the Study of Women in Television and Film at San Diego State University, women only represented 36 percent of major characters in 2018. Black female characters went from 16 percent to 21 percent. Even though women dominated the movies last year with Lorene Scafaria’s Hustlers, Melina Matsoukas Queen & Slim, Marielle Heller’s A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, Lulu Wang’s The Farewell, and many more, the Oscars still did not give women in the film industry the moment in history they deserved.  These women are not winning or getting nominated because the Academy does not decide who gets nominated, only who wins. The nomination depends on the branches. This means the directors’ branch choose who gets nominated for Best Director.  To be a part of the directors’ branch, they must have a minimum of two directorial credits, at least one from the recent ten years on theatrical feature films of a caliber that reflects the high standards of the Academy. The last way to be considered is to have in the judgment of the Directors Branch Executive Committee otherwise achieved unique distinction, earned exceptional merit, or made an outstanding contribution as a motion picture director.   Since 1950 women have been nominated for Best Picture 13 times from 379 total nominations, and no women have won. Twenty-one has been nominated for International Feature Film Award, but only three of them have succeeded. This boys club needs to end. It will not ruin the film industry if a dozen more women get nominated more than they were. There should no longer be the first anything after 92 award ceremonies.    Representation matters and further allowing systemic sexism to declare women’s treatment in the film industry is wrong. It’s not a coincidence. Let’s stop acting like it is.
