 Winnipeg-born artist Leslie Supnet is a second-generation Filipina whose 2011 animated film, gains + losses, transforms the act of her mourning. Supnet uses her affective responses to the death of her aunt and subsequent suicide of her cousin to construct diasporic intimacy. She confronts this devastating loss through playfulness and humour, a queer aesthetic strategy that I call “moving images”: animated art created from transformed affective responses that arise from diasporic movements, intimacies and traumas. Read alongside her oral history and analyzed in light of her experiences of discontent, her animated film reveals how the intimacies of her life experiences have manifested in her art. Thus, the animation can be seen as a queer art form that captures her productive mobilization of discontent in which she transforms trauma into healing and ultimately denaturalizes normative notions of kinship and belonging. </jats:p
