Speyerer Reichstag von 1529 gelten. Hier hätte allein schon das Spannungsver-hältnis zwischen dem (römischen) Majoritätsprinzip und den «jura singuloren» der protestierenden Fürsten eine hochinteressante Dissertation ergeben, ausge-hend von der quellenreichen Geschichte des Mehrheitsprinzips und seiner Ausnahmen im großen «Genossenschaftsrecht» von Otto von Gierke. Zimmer-mann übernimmt hier referierend die überlieferten Argumente der protestie-renden Landesfürsten und ihrer theologischen und juristischen Berater, ohne sich näher mit dem Verfassungsrecht des Reiches und mit den Verfassungs-theorien zum Majoritätsprinzip zu Beginn des 16. Jahrhunderts auseinanderzu-setzen. Ein Exkurs «Die Auffassung von Reformation und Bauernkrieg als frühe bür-gerliche Revolution» gilt einer Auseinandersetzung mit marxistischen Histori-kern der DDR. Recht und Reformation in der ersten Hälfte des 16Jahrhunderts ist ein immer wieder faszinierendes Thema. So bleibt an dieser Stelle nur das Bedauern, daß der Tübinger Doktorand auf ein so weites und schwieriges Feld geschickt wurde, ohne ihm ein zumutbares und begrenztes Untersuchungsgebiet abzu-stecken. Klaus Deppermann's biography of Melchior Hoffman presents one of the most important radical leaders of the Reformation era in a carefully constructed intellectual, political and social context. This contextual approach reflects the methodological changes in Reformation studies since the last major monograph on Hoffman, written by Peter Kawerau in 1954, which attempted to give a systematic, rather static presentation of Hoffman's religious thought, according to the canons of intellectual history then prevalent. Deppermann also reaffirms the importance of Hoffman for the history of Anabaptism in Strassburg, North Germany and the Netherlands, after a period in which Hoffman was considered a somewhat marginal, atypical figure in Anabaptist studies. Indeed, Hoffman's ten years of activity in Livonia, Sweden, Schleswig-Holstein, East Frisia, Strass-burg and the Netherlands yield a significant case study of the Reformation's di-vision into conservative and radical wings. The beginning of Hoffman's career tends to be dwarfed in Deppermann's treatment by a very substantial survey of the struggles between estates and na-tionalities which determined the course of the early Reformation in the Baltic countries. This early Baltic Reformation for a time provided the setting for 670 Hoffman's iconoclastic, apocalyptic, and spiritualistic lay apostolate. Later phases of the institutionalization and confessionalization of Baltic Protestantism led to Hoffman's successive expulsion from Livonia in 1526, Sweden in 1527 and Schleswig-Holstein in 1529. The Baltic period of Hoffman's career was re-garded by nineteenth-century interpreters as "Lutheran" and in the recent work of Calvin Pater as "Carlstadtian". Deppermann has followed a judicious middle way here. He shows that Hoffman's break with the Baltic Lutherans was not a merely doctrinal matter but rather a combination of socially explosive anticleri-cal ressentiment and radical religious ideas. In analyzing Hoffman's religious thought Deppermann differentiates between the spiritualism, which followed Carlstadt, and the still more important apocalypticism, which Carlstadt did not share. Deppermann presents Hoffman almost as a Symptom of the turbulent, socially and politically unsettled pre-confessional milieu of the early Baltic Re-formation. The Flensburg Disputation (1529), which led to Hoffman's final ex-pulsion from the Baltic lands, is presented in the context of the Lutheran Refor-mation's confessional self-definition over against the Sacramentarians. The most impressive and substantial portion of Deppermann's study views Hoffman as a product of the Strassburg Reformation. He analyzes the political and social conditions which made Strassburg ca. 1530 hospitable to all varieties of Reformation radicalism, and demonstrates very convincingly how Hoffman utilized diverse ideas of Strassburg Anabaptists, spiritualists and nonconformists in assuming the leadership of a local circle of "prophets". Here Hoffman first set himself up as an independent sect leader and allowed himself to become convinced by his prophetie followers of the apocalyptic significance of his own career. He underwent a corresponding metamorphosis in his religious ideas from advocating congregational demoeraey to proclaiming a hierarchy of charis-matic teachers, and from a passive, expeetant eschatology to a revolutionary, ac-tivist apocalypticism. Deppermann shows in correction of previous research, in-cluding my own, that the Münster upheaval was a logical further development of Hoffman's movement, given its stress on the importance of a theoeratie revo-lution at the apocalyptic moment. Again from the vantage point of Strassburg, Deppermann provides us with an abridged Version of the continuing fortunes of the schismridden Melchiorite tradition during Hoffman's imprisonment fol-lowing 1533. Here not only the Münsterites but David Joris and the West Hes-sian Melchiorites are related to the study of the imprisoned prophet and his Strassburg followers. Areas where further contextual study of Hoffman may be fruitful are his so-cial roots in Schwäbisch-Hall, the medieval intellectual traditions which in-formed his apocalypticism (particularly in light of its obvious Hussite compo-nents), and the extent of his importance for the later "Melchiorite" sects. Dep-permann is aware that "Die Prophetie von der Nähe des Jüngsten Tages war für Hoffman der wichtigste Teil seiner Verkündigung" (p. 67). It may prove that 671 this central and continuing theme of Hoffman's thought has a richer traditional grounding than we have yet discovered. In any case, the power of Hoffman's ap-ocalyptic message remains a historical problem. With its impressive combination of political, social and theological analysis, Deppermann's interpretation of Hoffman is one of the major monographs which broaden our understanding of a previously underestimated component of social and religious radicalism in Anabaptism and the Reformation. Stayer, Kingston, Ontario Amedeo Molnär, Die Waldenser, Geschichte und europäisches Ausmaß einer Ketzerbewegung, Berlin (DDR), Union Verlag VOB, Göttingen, Vandenhoeck und Ruprecht, 1980, 458 S. Die besondere Leistung dieser umfangreichen Arbeit des Prager Theologen und Historikers Amedeo Molndr liegt in zwei Aspekten: Erstmals in diesem Jahrhundert liegt in deutscher Sprache eine Darstellung vor, die, von immenser Quellen- und Detailkenntnis und weitem kirchengeschicht-lichem Überblick geprägt, die ersten dreieinhalb Jahrhunderte der Waldenser-bewegung von Grund auf neu nachzeichnet. Darin ist Molnärs Darstellung der einzigen anderen neuen Waldenserge-schichte von Giorgio Tourn (I Valdesi, 1977; deutsch 1980) entschieden überle-gen. Hier liegt allerdings auch ihre Grenze, denn die Darstellung führt nur bis zum Anschluß der Waldenser an die Reformation (Synode von Chanforan 1531). Molnar gelingt es vor allem für die ersten Jahre der Laienbewegung um den Lyoner Kaufmann Valdes (zwischen 1170/1180), eine plastische dogmen-und geistesgeschichtliche Darstellung zu geben, wie sie sich bisher wohl nur sehr wenige Spezialisten zurechtlegen konnten. Schon nur dieser ersten 100 Seiten wegen verdient Molnärs Buch eine große Leserschaft in Universität, Kir-che und Schule. Der zweite Aspekt ist eine auch für Kenner der Waldenser Geschichte überra-schende Einsicht: Daß nämlich in der harten Verfolgungs- und Ausrottungszeit zwischen 1350 und 1500 die Waldenser als Bewegung und geistige Kraft über-lebten, weil sie im Böhmen der Zeit vor und nach Hus nicht nur Duldung, son-dern neue Anstöße und sogar Versuche zur Beteiligung an der hussitischen Missionsarbeit erfuhren. Molnar, wie kaum ein anderer mit den Details von Böhmens Geschichte zwischen 1300 und 1500 vertraut, legt durchaus überzeu-gend dar, daß diese zeitweilige Verschiebung der Waldenser Lebenszentren von Süd- und Mitteleuropa nach Osteuropa weithin verantwortlich ist für den Nicht-Untergang der waldensischen Bewegung angesichts der über Jahrhun-672
