It consists of a grant covering the travel to the 15th International Conference of Ethiopian Studies (July 2003 in Hamburg) as well as research and study grant for the stay at Ham-burg University, Institute of Asia and Africa, Department of Ethiopian studies for two months. The grant can support work in various fields of Ethiopian studies, including linguistics, philology, anthropology, history, religion and culture or art as long as those deal with the Horn of Africa. The eligibility requirements are: M.A. degree or equivalent (with distinc-tion) detailed PhD research proposal as well as readiness to participate in the ENCYCLOPAEDIA AETHIOPICA project. The applicants may not be older than 37 years by the application date. Informal application including curriculum vitae, master߈s thesis summary (accompanied by a letter of recommendation, preferably by an academic) as well as a narrative proposal outlining the planned PhD research have to be submitted by July 15, 2002 to Prof. Dr. Dr. Siegbert Uhlig, Hamburg Uni-versity, Institute of Asia and Africa, Edmund-Siemers-Allee 1, 20146 Ham-burg, Germany. The applicants will be informed of the decision of the Foundation Board by December 31, 2002. The award will be officially announced and handed over by the President of Hamburg University within the framework of the 15th International Conference of Ethiopian Studies in July 2003.
