The animals, as well as all living beings are entitled to a healthy and happy life, living in harmony with the environment around them. Forthis basic care that ensure not only the welfare and health of these, as well as reduce the risks to public health are needed. Great interest in animal welfare emerged, especially in the last three decades, and the ethical and moral dilemmas concerning the treatment of animals allowed some changes in the human animal relationship. Thus, this study covers animal welfare and its relation to responsible ownership and aims to assess the population's level of knowledge about welfare and responsible guard of dogs and cats and their relationship with the socio economic level of the owners of these animals in Areia-Paraíba. We used a through field research questionnaires in five points of the city during on the day of rabies vaccination campaign which takes place annually. From a total of 361 guardians of animals, we found that 308 (85.32%) had a family income ≤ 2 minimum salaries and 53 (14.68%)> 2 minimum salaries. We found a significant relationship when we associate the socioeconomic level and variables type of jood, vaccine, castration and habit of taking the animal to the vet. Thus, it can be said that the level of education and household income are important in the decision to adopt measures to improve animal welfare and responsible ownership.Os animais, assim como todos os seres vivos tem direito a uma vida saudável e feliz, vivendo em harmonia com o ambiente que os rodeia. Para tanto são necessários cuidados básicos que assegurem não somente o bem estar e a saúde destes, como também a redução dos riscos à saúde pública.Grande interesse pelo bemestar animal emergiu, especialmente, nas últimas três décadas, e os dilemas éticos e morais em relação ao tratamento dispensado aos animais possibilitaram algumas mudanças na relação homemanimal. Sendo assim, o presente trabalho abrange o bemestar animal e sua relação com a guarda responsável e tem como objetivo avaliar o nível de conhecimento da população sobre bem estar e guarda responsável de cães e gatos e sua relação com o padrão socioeconômico dos proprietários destes animais na cidade de Areia- Paraíba. Utilizou-seuma pesquisa de campo por meio da aplicação de questionários em cinco pontos da cidade, no dia da campanha de vacinação antirrábica que ocorre anualmente. No total de 361 tutores de animais entrevistados, verificamos que 308 (85,32%) possuíam renda familiar ≤2 salários mínimos e 53 (14,68%) > 2 salários mínimos.Encontramos relação significativa quando associamoso padrão socioeconômicoe as variáveis tipo de alimentação, tipo de vacina, castração e hábito de levar o animal ao veterinário. Sendo assim, pode-se afirmar que o grau de escolaridade e a renda familiar são importantes na decisão de se adotar medidas que melhorem o bem estar animal e a guarda responsável
