KUKILA 9: 74-77 FURTHER NOTES ON THE AVIFAUNA OF THE RIAU ARCHIPELAGO by Lim Kim Seng (first draft received 30 January 1997) SUMMARY Further notes are supplied on the avifauna of Batam, Bintan and other islands in the Riau Archipelago that supplement those presented in Rajathurai (1996) in Kukila Volume 8. INTRODUCTION Rajathurai (1996) presents a summary of the avifauna of the islands of the Riau Archipelago as recorded in the existing ornithological literature for the region, with comments on present status and new records as observed by himself and by teams from the Nature Society (Singapore), the National University of Singapore, and by individual observers. However, Rajathurai (op cit.) was not aware that the author of the present paper, with other observers, also visited Batam on 4 July 1992, Bintan on 17 18April 1993 and 23 25 February 1996, and Karimun Besar on 18 19 December 1995. Significant observations or comments on status from these visits are detailed below. Records that predate the first island records quoted in Rajathurai are annotated with an asterisk (*). Contributors to this paper are Safizah Abdullah (SA), Ho Hua Chew (HHC), Mandy Lee (ML), Lim Kim Keang (LKK), Lim Kim Seng (LKS), Sutari Supari (SS) and Sunny Yeo (SY). Common and scientific names follow MacKinnon & Phillipps (1993). SYSTEMATIC LIST Great-billed Heron Ardea sumatrana. 1, Pulau Soboe, 17 April 1993, is the first for that island (Soboe is a small island off Batam); also recorded Bintan (2, north Bintan, 17April 1993) (HHC, LKK, LKS, SBS, SY). Booted Eagle Hieraaetus pennatus. 1 pale phase adult on north Bintan, 17 April 1993* [see Kukila (this issue) for detailes]. Changeable Hawk-eagle Spizaetus cirrhatus. 1, Pasir Panjang forest, Bintan, 17 April 1993* (HHC, LKK, LKS, SBS, SY). Peregrine Falcon Falco peregrinus. 1, Pasir Lagoi, north Bintan, 17April 1993 (HHC, LKK, LKS, SBS, SY) is the first confirmed record for Bintan and the RiauArchipelago. White-breasted Waterhen Amaurorms phoenicurus. 1, Bintan, 17April 1993* (HHC, LKK, SBS, SY). 75 1997 Notes on the avifauna of the Riau Archipelago Malaysian Plover Charadrius peronii. Further breeding record: female with 2 chicks at Pasir Panjang, 18 April 1993 (HHC, LKK, LKS, SBS, SY). Common Greenshank Tringa nebularia. 1, north Bintan, 17April 1993* (HHC, LKK, LKS, SBS,SY). Ruddy Turnstone Arenaria interpres. A party of 7, north Bintan, 17 April 1993* (HHC, LKK, LKS, SBS, SY). Long-tailed Parakeet Psittacula longicauda.A'large flock' at Gunung Jantan, Karimum Besar, 18 Dec 1995 (ML, SY) appears to be the first record for this island. Plaintive Cuckoo Cacomantis merulinus. A voice record, north Bintan, 18 April 1993* (HHC, LKK, LKS, SBS, SY). Lesser Coucal Centropus bengalensis. 1, Bintan, 18April 1993* (HHC, LKK, LKS, SBS, SY). Collared Scopsowl Otus lempiji. A voice record from Turi Beach, Batam, 4 July 1992 (SA, LKS), appears to be the first record from the RiauArchipelago (see also Rajathurai 1996 for a record from Bintan). Common Dollarbird Eurystomus orientalis. Individuals at Turi Beach, Batam, 4 July 1992* (SA, LKS) and Bintan Beach Resort, Bintan, 17April 1993* (HHC, LKK, LKS, SBS, SY). Red-crowned Barbet Megalaima rafflesii. Additional record from Karimun Besar (see Rajathurai 1996), calls heard at Gunung Jantan, 18 December 1995 (ML, SY). Barn Swallow Hirundo rustica. Counts of 2,500 and 3,000 on 23 and 24 February 1996 respectively roosting in Tanjung Pinang town centre, Bintan (SA, LKS). Bar-bellied Cuckoo-shrike Coracina striata. An adult male in north Bintan forest on 17 April 1993 (HHC, LKK, LKS, SBS, SY) confirms the continued presence of this species on the island. Black-naped Oriole Oriolus chinensis. Contra Rajathurai (1996), this species is described as relatively common on Batam and Bintan, on 4 July 1992 and 17 18April 1993 respectively. Ashy Tailorbird Orthotomus ruficeps. 1, north Bintan, 17April 1993* (HHC, LKK, LKS, SBS, SY). 76 Lim Kim Seng KUKILA 9 Yellow bellied Prinia Prinia flaviventris.Avoice record from Gunung Jantan, Karimun Besar, 19 Dec 1995 (ML, SY), predates the voice record quoted in Rajathurai (1996). Zitting Cisticola Cisticola juncidis. Voice record on Bintan, 17April 1993*, confirmed with a sighting the following day (HHC, LKK, LKS, SBS, SY). Pied Fantail Rhipidura javanica. 1, north Bintan, 17April 1993* (HHC, LKK, LKS, SBS, SY). Brown Shrike Lanius cristatus. 1, Bintan, 17April 1993* (HHC, LKK, SBS, SY). Javan Myna Acridotheres javanicus. 1, Gunung Jantan, Karimun Besar, 19 December 1995 (ML, SY) is the first report of this presumably feral species from the island (note, however, that it has. expanded its range considerably on mainland Sumatra, see Marle & Voous 1988). Purple throated Sunbird Nectarinia sperata. Present in forest at Gunung Jantan, Karimun Besar, 19 December 1995 (ML, SY), apparently the first record for the island. Copper throated Sunbird Nectarinia calcostetha. 1, mangroves, north Bintan, 17 April 1993* (HHC, LKK, LKS, SBS, SY). Scarlet breasted Flowerpecker Prionochilus thoracicus. Pair at Pasir Panjang forest, 17April 1993*, with the female observed carrying food to a nest where young were heard; another pair in the unusual habitat of a coconut plantation near Bintan Beach Resort the following day (HHC, LKK, LKS, SBS, SY). White rumped Munia Lonchura striata. Flock of 5, north Bintan, 17 April 1993* (HHC, LKK, LKS, SBS, SY). Scaly breasted Munia Lonchura punctulata. 2, Bintan Beach Resort, Bintan, 18 April 1993* (HHC, LKK, LKS, SBS, SY). RECORDS FROM PENYENGET ISLAND Avisit was made to this previously omithologically unknown islet lying off Tanjong Pinang, Bintan, on 77 1997 Notes on the avifauna of the Riau Archipelago 24 February 1996 (SA, LKS). The islet is mainly covered by coconut plantations and scrub. The following species were recorded: Striated Heron Butorides striatus. Pacific Reef egret Egretta sacra, Brahminy Kite Haliastur indus, White bellied Sea eagle Haliaeetus leucogaster, Whimbrel Numenius arquata, Common Sandpiper Actitis hypoleucos. Little Tern Sterna albifrons, Great Crested Tern Sterna bergii, Rock Pigeon Columba livia, Spotted Dove Streptopelia chinensis, Little Swift Apus affinis, Collared Kingfisher Halcyon chloris, Barn Swallow Hirundo rustica, Pacific Swallow Hirundo tahitica, Yellow vented Bulbul Pycnonotus goiavier, Black naped Oriole Oriolus chinensis, Large billed Crow Corvus macrorhynchos, Asian Glossy Starling Aplonis panayensis, Olive backed Sunbird Nectarinia jugularis, and Eurasian Tree sparrow Passer montanus. (In view of the popularity of this species as a cage bird in Indonesia and the influx of human population into Batam, it seems likely that this bird may have had a feral origin ed.).
