Growth-Unemployment Relationship in Turkey for the 2005-2015 Period and the Role of Supply and Demand Shocks

Abstract

This study first investigates the empirical relationship between economic growth and unemployment rate in Turkey for the 2005-2015 period. Our results show that there is a strong negative relationship between the variables in this time period. Next, we investigate the effects of supply and demand shocks underlying the changes in economic growth rate and unemployment rate. According to our results, during our sample period supply shocks have been more effective on real GDP growth rate compared to the demand shocks, whereas for the unemployment rate the situation is reverse. One of the factors driving this result is that during the sample period the unit effect of supply shocks on employment is lower than that of the demand shocks.Bu çalışmada ilk olarak 2005-2015 arası dönemde Türkiye’de ekonomik büyüme ile işsizlik oranı arasındaki ilişki incelenmiştir. Sonuçlar, değişkenler arasında belirgin ters yönlü bir ilişkinin olduğunu göstermiştir. Çalışmada daha sonra ekonomik büyüme ve işsizlik oranında gözlemlenen değişikliklerin altında yatan arz ve talep değişimlerinin etkileri irdelenmiştir. Buna göre örneklem genelinde arz şoklarının öncellikle reel GSYİH büyüme oranı üzerinde, talep şoklarının ise işsizlik seviyesi üzerinde daha etkili olmuş oldukları gözlemlenmiştir. Bu sonucu sağlayan bir etmen arz şoklarının istihdam üzerindeki birim etkisinin talep şoklarına oranla düşük gerçekleşmiş olmasıdır
