The chief meaningful characteristic of Futures Studies is ontological and epistemological insecurity, not confidence from chaos. Our experienced world is continuously being reconstructed through flows of information and actions. There are more worlds than we could ever know. The best we can hope for is awareness from flows

    Culture Theory

{Excerpt} Some needs are common to all people—at all times and in all places. They are the need to make a living, the need for social organization, the need for knowledge and learning, the need for normative and metaphysical expression, and the need for aesthetic manifestation. These nuts and bolts of everyday lifework through the co-evolving realms of environment, economy, society, polity, and technology to make up systems of mutual sustainability or (in opposition) mutual vulnerability. Since people (not economies) are the main object and ultimate purpose of endeavors to progress, a society’s cultureis not just an instrument of development cooperation: it is its basis. The marriage of economy and environment was overdue and has spawned a world agenda for that purpose. Likewise, the relationship between culture and development should be clarified and deepened in ways that are authentic, indigenous, self-reliant, sovereign, civilized, and creative. Culture theory is a branch of anthropology, semiotics, and other related social science disciplines such as political economy, in particular, but also sociology and communication (to name a few). It seeks to define heuristic concepts of culture. Hence, cultural studies often concentrate on how a particular phenomenon relates to matters of ideology, nationality, ethnicity, social class, and gender. The potential for application is correspondingly vast—it follows that practitioners of culture theory draw from a diverse array of theories and associated practices and encompass many different approaches, methods, and academic perspectives. And so, it remains relatively unstructured as an academic field that needs to move from “Let’s” to “How.” Taking culture into account should mean understanding how cultural dimensions enter utility and production functions of various kinds. In the case of development agencies and their partner countries, new processes of policyanalysis and participatory management should surely be devised so that non-economic social sciences become full partners in the decision-making concerning the policy andinvestment decisions that guide business processes. Much remains to be done

Love thy extra-terrestrial neighbour: Charity and compassion in Luc Besson’s space operas The Fifth Element (1997) and Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017)

The role of romantic love in cinema – and its redeeming aspects – has been extensively explored in film studies and beyond. However, non-romantic aspects of love, especially love for the neighbour, have not yet received as much attention. This is particularly true when looking at mainstream science fiction cinema. This is surprising as the interstellar outlook of many of these films and consequently the interaction with a whole range of new ‘neighbours’ raises an entirely new set of challenges. In this article, the author explores these issues with regard to Luc Besson’s science-fiction spectacles The Fifth Element (1997) and Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017). Both films have divided fans and critics and it is indeed easy to dismiss them as mere spectacle with little depth or message, as many reviewers have done. Yet, as this article demonstrates, beneath their shiny, colourful surface, both films make a distinct contribution to the theme of neighbourly love. What is more, Besson’s films often seem to develop a close link between more common notions of romantic love and agapic forms of love and thus offer a perspective of exploring our relationship to the alien as our neighbour.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio

The present form of Science and modern technology is threatening the Islamic authority. In fact its form is not from that in Islamic scientific tradition which is part and parcel of the civilization. However we need to depend on the present form of science and technology. This has implication to ward our understanding and interpretation of Islam if we want to understand the problems faced by Muslim in this modern world. But, the apparent conflict between Islam and modern science can be overcome through cautiously analyzing and studying the criteria and nature of traditional Islamic science. A qualitative study and historical analysis were adopted as core methods of study and had produced convincing outcome. Development factors and past Islamic science developement were found to be due to both internal and external factors. We should examine factors as they can be used as guidelines in our effort to realize the Malaysian mould of science development. The finding of this analysis, although important cannot replace the modern science and its implications. It can however be applied towards the construction of a framework or mould required to help us understand and overcome the problems faced when there appear to be a clash between Islam and modern science
