Simtech 08 poster submission: digital upheavals: ethnographic studies on digital-DIY activity

    Get PDF
This poster describes current work-in-progress on a digital-DIY research project, exploring how people experiencing life-change configure and re-configure their domestic entertainment, information and communication technologies. The project draws upon a number of theoretical concepts from human-computer interaction, the social construction of technology, material culture and design studies to understand the digital-DIY phenomenon and is methodologically rooted in the ethnographic tradition. This poster describes early pilot-study work utilizing Blythe et al’s (2002) ‘Technology Biographies’ method applied to (amongst other pilot studies) the author’s own autoethnographic study of moving home and concludes with a summary of themes and concepts emerging from this early data. The poster presents proposals for future empirical studies of people experiencing life-change

We invent the notion of a {\it dimension of a variety} VV as the cardinality of all its proper {\it derived} subvarieties (of the same type). The dimensions of varieties of lattices, varieties of regular bands and other general algebraic structures are determined.Comment: The results of the paper were presented at the workshop AAA71 and CYA21 at B\c{e}dlewo, Poland on February 11, 2006. the paper is submitted to Discussiones Mathematicae Algebra and Stochastc Methods, special issu

Exploring Intercultural Factors in International Pilot-Air Traffic Controller Communications

    Get PDF
This workshop aims to present results from exploratory research that investigates culturally influenced factors arising from international radiotelephony communications as well as pilots’ and ATCOs’ perceptions of their threat to aviation safety. The final goal is to generate a taxonomy of intercultural factors that can be used as a tool to improve intercultural communications within the aviation community. Based on research data, workshop participants will rate the importance of some of the identified factors as safety issues, consider possibilities to incorporate them into training activities, and discuss strategies to address these issues in terms of testing and policy change

Identifying Interaction Variations that Affect the Effectiveness of Communication

    Get PDF
This workshop will ask participants to identify the interaction process between pilots, and pilots and controllers, with consideration as to how these interactions can lead to an accident. To help participants be aware of these interaction variations that affect performance when facing a complex task, they will be invited to play a game that recreates cognitive, affective and conative aspects of communication, the main categories of the interaction process. The ultimate goal is to link these categories with the communicative approach as a teaching method
