Propagating Data Policies: a User Study
When publishing data, data licences are used to specify the actions that are permitted or prohibited, and the duties that target data consumers must comply with. However, in complex environments such as a smart city data portal, multiple data sources are constantly being combined, processed and redistributed. In such a scenario, deciding which policies apply to the output of a process based on the licences attached to its input data is a difficult, knowledge- intensive task. In this paper, we evaluate how automatic reasoning upon semantic representations of policies and of data flows could support decision making on policy propagation. We report on the results of a user study designed to assess both the accuracy and the utility of such a policy-propagation tool, in comparison to a manual approach

Virtual Reference for Video Collections: System Infrastructure, User Interface and Pilot User Study
A new video-based Virtual Reference (VR) tool called VideoHelp was designed and developed to support video
navigation escorting, a function that enables librarians to co-navigate a digital video with patrons in the web-based
environment. A client/server infrastructure was adopted for the VideoHelp system and timestamps were used to achieve
the video synchronization between the librarians and patrons. A pilot usability study of using VideoHelp prototype in video seeking was conducted and the preliminary results demonstrated that the system is easy to learn and use, and real-time assistance from virtual librarians in video navigation is desirable on a conditional basis
Aspect-based video browsing - a user study
In this paper, we present a user study on a novel video search interface based on the concept of aspect browsing. We aim to confirm whether automatically suggesting new aspects can increase the performance of an aspect-based browser. The proposed strategy is to assist the user in exploratory video search by actively suggesting new query terms and video shots. We use a clustering technique to identify potential aspects and use the results to propose suggestions to the user to help them in their search task. We evaluate this approach by analysing the users' perception and by exploiting the log files
User Participation in Social Media: Digg Study
The social news aggregator Digg allows users to submit and moderate stories
by voting on (digging) them. As is true of most social sites, user
participation on Digg is non-uniformly distributed, with few users contributing
a disproportionate fraction of content. We studied user participation on Digg,
to see whether it is motivated by competition, fueled by user ranking, or
social factors, such as community acceptance.
For our study we collected activity data of the top users weekly over the
course of a year. We computed the number of stories users submitted, dugg or
commented on weekly. We report a spike in user activity in September 2006,
followed by a gradual decline, which seems unaffected by the elimination of
user ranking. The spike can be explained by a controversy that broke out at the
beginning of September 2006. We believe that the lasting acrimony that this

Alternative candidate STS flight charge approaches which will provide a basis for NASA's determination of an STS flight charge policy were analyzed. The analysis used STS transportation costs furnished by NASA. The STS User Charge Analysis was accomplished by (1) generating criteria for evaluation of alternative flight charge approaches, (2) defining alternative flight charge approaches, (3) computing flight charges for selected missions, (4) evaluating results using the criteria generated under (1), and (5) recommending flight charge approaches to be used as a basis for the formulation of a STS user flight charge policy
The Secret to Successful User Communities: An Analysis of Computer Associates’ User Groups
This paper provides the first large scale study that examines the impact of both individual- and group-specific factors on the benefits users obtain from their user communities. By empirically analysing 924 survey responses from individuals in 161 Computer Associates' user groups, this paper aims to identify the determinants of successful user communities. To measure success, the amount of time individual members save through having access to their user networks is used. As firms can significantly profit from successful user communities, this study proposes four key implications of the empirical results for the management of user communities

LANDSAT D local user terminal study
The effect of the changes incorporated in the LANDSAT D system on the ability of a local user terminal to receive, record and process data in real time was studied. Alternate solutions to the problems raised by these changes were evaluated. A loading analysis was performed in order to determine the quantities of data that a local user terminal (LUT) would be interested in receiving and processing. The number of bits in an MSS and a TM scene were calculated along with the number of scenes per day that an LUT might require for processing. These then combined to a total number of processed bits/day for an LUT as a function of sensor and coverage circle radius
