Ethical but Upsetting Geoscience Research: A Case Study
Geoscience research may upset people even though it is ethically acceptable. In this paper we attempt to explore three questions about such research. It will turn out that (1) under most circumstances ethical but upsetting geoscience research is morally permissible, (2) revising this research in response to upset-induced external interference is morally impermissible in the absence of strong countervailing pragmatic reasons and attempts to reduce upset, and (3) potentially upsetting geoscience research ought to be communicated truthfully and tailored to each individual situation. These general propositions are applied to a case of ethical but upsetting research that we ourselves are currently involved
Manufacturing of Composites by Pressure Infiltration, Structure and Mechanical Properties
This paper presents the possibility of composite block production by using pressure
infiltration technology. This method uses the pressure of an inert gas (usually argon or
nitrogen) to force the melted matrix material to infiltrate the reinforcing elements. Two types
of materials were considered: metal matrix syntactic foam and carbon fibre reinforced metal
matrix composite. Physical and mechanical investigations – such as optical microscopy,
scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffractography (XRD), tensile and upsetting
tests (considering aspect ratio) – were performed. The results of measurements are
summarized briefly here. Microscopic investigations showed almost perfect infiltration. XRD
measurements and tensile tests revealed negative effect of an intermetallic phase (Al(4)C(3)) on
ultimate tensile strength (UTS). Syntactic foams showed plateau region in their upsetting
diagrams. The effect of aspect ratio was also investigated. Specimens with higher aspect ratios
showed higher peak stress and higher modulus of elasticity. In the case of carbon fibre
reinforced metal matrix composites Al(4)C(3) ensured high compressive fracture strength
Simple key locks turbine rotor blades
Symmetrical, cruciform key has end tabs which bend up to lock tubine rotor blades against axial displacement. The key locks without introducing aerodynamic resistance or upsetting rotor balance
Electrical upsetting of metal sheet forms weld edge
Electric gathering of sheet stock edges forms metal sheets in the shape of gore sections with heavier edge areas that can be welded without loss of strength. The edges are gathered by progressive resistance heating and upsetting, and are formed automatically. This process avoids disturbance of the metals internal structure
Modelling of forging processes assisted by piezoelectric actuators : principles and experimental validation
This paper presents the modelling of a forging processes assisted by a piezoelectric actuator (PA), which is used to generate specific low frequency vibration waveforms. Experimental results show that such waveforms reduce the necessary forging force during upsetting tests. The main problems which remain are defining the appropriate waveforms, predicting their influence on the process and the actuator and designing the control. Due to the complexity of the interactions between the different components of the system, a complete model of the process is needed. Such a model is developed here using an energetic macroscopic representation to preserve causality throughout the modelling. Simulation results are then compared to representative experimental results
The research of pipe ends upsetting in hydraulic presses in order to improve the quality of tubing.
99,8%.This work is devoted to the process of pipe ends upsetting in hydraulic presses SMS Meer. The issues of upsetting technology optimization to improve the quality of products and to reduce manufacturing costs are considered. The analyses of metal forming in the deformation zone and thermal conditions of the process were carried out, the equation to calculate the press forces was obtained and the ways to improve the economic indicators of the process were identified. As a result, it was able to optimize the pipe ends upsetting process and ensure the production yield at the level of 99.8%.Программа развития УрФУ на 2013 год (п.1.2.2.3
Modelling of piezoelectric actuators used in forging processes: principles and experimental validation
This paper deals with the modelling of a piezo- electric stack actuator used to generate specific low frequency vibration waveforms to assist forging processes. Experimental results show that such waveforms reduce the necessary forging force during upsetting tests. Due to the complexity of the interactions between the different components of the system, a complete model of the process is needed. Such a model is developed here using an energetic macroscopic representation to preserve causality throughout the modelling. TECHNOLOGICAL GOVERNANCE IN ASEAN – FAILINGS IN TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER AND DOMESTIC RESEARCH
Technological governance has only been partially successful for technological upgrading in the five ASEAN countries discussed, with the exception of Singapore. This is a reflection of the fact that FDI is poorly integrated in local and national structures which severely limits the spill-over effects. The early successful export-oriented economic development is no longer viable unless policies and institutions undergo major changes. Furthermore, a continued high rate of economic growth in China, making country into the “factory of the world, is also upsetting assumptions and viability of earlier policies for technological upgrading in most ASEAN countries.technology policy; R&D; FDI
Simulation of the hollow ingot upsetting in the press container
