A detailed description of the uncertainty analysis for High Area Ratio Rocket Nozzle tests at the NASA Lewis Research Center
A preliminary uncertainty analysis has been performed for the High Area Ratio Rocket Nozzle test program which took place at the altitude test capsule of the Rocket Engine Test Facility at the NASA Lewis Research Center. Results from the study establish the uncertainty of measured and calculated parameters required for the calculation of rocket engine specific impulse. A generalized description of the uncertainty methodology used is provided. Specific equations and a detailed description of the analysis are presented. Verification of the uncertainty analysis model was performed by comparison with results from the experimental program's data reduction code. Final results include an uncertainty for specific impulse of 1.30 percent. The largest contributors to this uncertainty were calibration errors from the test capsule pressure and thrust measurement devices
A Convolutional Neural Network model based on Neutrosophy for Noisy Speech Recognition
Convolutional neural networks are sensitive to unknown noisy condition in the
test phase and so their performance degrades for the noisy data classification
task including noisy speech recognition. In this research, a new convolutional
neural network (CNN) model with data uncertainty handling; referred as NCNN
(Neutrosophic Convolutional Neural Network); is proposed for classification
task. Here, speech signals are used as input data and their noise is modeled as
uncertainty. In this task, using speech spectrogram, a definition of
uncertainty is proposed in neutrosophic (NS) domain. Uncertainty is computed
for each Time-frequency point of speech spectrogram as like a pixel. Therefore,
uncertainty matrix with the same size of spectrogram is created in NS domain.
In the next step, a two parallel paths CNN classification model is proposed.
Speech spectrogram is used as input of the first path and uncertainty matrix
for the second path. The outputs of two paths are combined to compute the final
output of the classifier. To show the effectiveness of the proposed method, it
has been compared with conventional CNN on the isolated words of Aurora2
dataset. The proposed method achieves the average accuracy of 85.96 in noisy
train data. It is more robust against Car, Airport and Subway noises with
accuracies 90, 88 and 81 in test sets A, B and C, respectively. Results show
that the proposed method outperforms conventional CNN with the improvement of
6, 5 and 2 percentage in test set A, test set B and test sets C, respectively.
It means that the proposed method is more robust against noisy data and handle

Pervasive Uncertainty in Second Modernity: an Empirical Test
Recent discussion of social change implies that, for a number of reasons, to do with globalisation, shifts in family life styles and labour markets, more critical attitudes toward the authority of officials and experts and greater awareness of possibilities and options, social life is more strongly affected by a sense of uncertainty. It also implies that uncertainty is pervasive and not specifically linked to fears about specific contingencies. It is associated with an orientation towards self-direction and a rejection of tradition and conformity. This thesis has been widely discussed, but rarely tested using quantitative data. This paper uses data from a recent national survey carried out by the ESRC Social Contexts and Responses to Risk network to show that uncertainty and security concerns are strong, but are in fact linked to traditionalism and conformity rather than to a critical and reflexive awareness. A high value is attached to self-direction, but this is linked to privileged social status rather than attitudes of pervasive social uncertainty. Measurements for liquid rocket engine performance code verification
The goal of the rocket engine performance code verification tests is to obtain the I sub sp with an accuracy of 0.25% or less. This needs to be done during the sequence of four related tests (two reactive and two hot gas simulation) to best utilize the loss separation technique recommended in this study. In addition to I sub sp, the measurements of the input and output parameters for the codes are needed. This study has shown two things in regard to obtaining the I sub sp uncertainty within the 0.25% target. First, this target is generally not being realized at the present time, and second, the instrumentation and testing technology does exist to obtain this 0.25% uncertainty goal. However, to achieve this goal will require carefully planned, designed, and conducted testing. In addition, the test-stand (or system) dynamics must be evaluated in the pre-test and post-test phases of the design of the experiment and data analysis, respectively always keeping in mind that a .25% overall uncertainty in I sub sp is targeted. A table gives the maximum allowable uncertainty required for obtaining I sub sp with 0.25% uncertainty, the currently-quoted instrument specification, and present test uncertainty for the parameters. In general, it appears that measurement of the mass flow parameter within the required uncertainty may be the most difficult
The nature of medical evidence and its inherent uncertainty for the clinical consultation : qualitative study
Objective To describe how clinicians deal with the
uncertainty inherent in medical evidence in clinical
consultations.
Design Qualitative study.
Setting Clinical consultations related to hormone
replacement therapy, bone densitometry, and breast
screening in seven general practices and three
secondary care clinics in the UK NHS.
Participants Women aged 45-64.
Results 45 of the 109 relevant consultations included
sufficient discussion for analysis. The consultations
could be categorised into three groups: focus on
certainty for now and this test, with slippage into
general reassurance; a coherent account of the
medical evidence for risks and benefits, but blurring
of the uncertainty inherent in the evidence and giving
an impression of certainty; and acknowledging the
inherent uncertainty of the medical evidence and
negotiating a provisional decision.
Conclusion Strategies health professionals use to
cope with the uncertainty inherent in medical
evidence in clinical consultations include the use of
provisional decisions that allow for changing
priorities and circumstances over time, to avoid
slippage into general reassurance from a particular
test result, and to avoid the creation of a myth of
certainty
