    Training for success: A guide for peer trainers

    [Excerpt] Training for Success: A Guide for Peer Trainers is a guide to help villagers, like you, teach others to operate a business like the one you operate. It was developed as part of the ILO project Alleviating Poverty through Peer Training (APPT). The project was designed to reduce poverty among people with disabilities in Cambodia by using village-based peer trainers to teach others. The purpose of this guide is to teach you, a possible peer trainer, how to teach others to replicate your business! The APPT project helped more than 950 people, mostly with disabilities, start businesses over a fi ve-year period. More than 200 peer trainers were involved. Many of the peer trainers also had disabilities. And, since the project paid special attention to women, most of the trainers and trainees were women, some with disabilities, some without. This guide was developed to help train peer trainers and is based on years of ILO experience. It was field-tested as part of a series of workshops for peer trainers conducted by the APPT project in the provinces of Siem Reap, Kompong Thom and Pursat in 2007. Training for Success: A Guide for Peer Trainers will be used by people like yourself who are already peer trainers or who want to start training others.     Although the health of the UK population has improved significantly over the last century, inequalities in health still exist, with some of Britain’s biggest killers being ‘preventable’ illnesses. The 2004 white paper ‘Choosing Health: Making Healthy Choices Easier’ aimed to introduce initiatives to reduce inequalities in health. One such initiative was ‘Health Trainers’ – a new role staffed by individuals drawn from and based in deprived areas.     Vocational training in family medicine: A qualitative study of perspectives of trainers in community-based training

    Objective: To investigate how trainers perceived the vocational training programme in family medicine in Hong Kong. Design: Structured discussion with trainers who had trainees in the community-based segment of the vocational training programme of the Hong Kong College of Family Physicians. Subjects: Forty seven eligible trainers were identified and invited to attend the discussion. Thirteen trainers participated in two structured discussions. Main outcome measures: The opinions expressed by the participants towards the vocational training programme. Results: The response rate was 27.7%. The trainers were clear about their roles but saw an overlap between their functions and those of the trainees' supervisors. They were unsure on what to teach and how to teach, and looked for guidance from the Hong Kong College of Family Physicians. They felt that there should be more varied training methods, more resources at training centres, better training arrangements and more coordination among training stakeholders. Some trainers experienced difficulties with their trainees. All trainers saw the benefit of an annual trainers workshop. Conclusion: It is recommended that the College provides better organisation for and training of trainers. A trainers co-ordinator, a trainers handbook and an annual trainers workshop are some suggestions.published_or_final_versio

    Competencies and training needs and its impact on determining the professional skills of Algerian elite coaches

    The main purpose of this study is to develop an understanding of the trainers' perceptions of competency and training needs related to professional skills in accordance with professional experience and academic education. The sample included 76 judo trainers who answered a questionnaire that included a measure that focused on the perceptions of competency and another on training needs. An exploratory factor analysis was used with the maximum probability factor (Oblimin) to determine emerging factors. A comparison of the Coaches ' concepts was made in the training experience and the academic background of the Coaches, where multiple comparisons were applied using ANOVA and Tukey. Three main areas of skills were done: skills related to annual planning; skills related to practice and competition; and personal education and training skills. Coach es' perceptions of their expertise were affected, with low-level trainers classifying themselves at lower levels of efficiency and more training needs; and higher-education Coaches in physical education were more efficient than mid-level trainers. Finally, most trainers consider them as efficient as they have indicated the training needs to be provided, which brings important feedback to the education of trainers. This suggests that trainers are an increasing their knowledge and competence in a wide range of areas that should be considered in future training of trainers programs, also to ensure the quality of education and training in the different level of physical and sports education institutes of the Algerian universities

    Involving service users in mental health education and training has increased considerably over the last few years, especially in the initial pre-registration training of mental health professionals (social workers, nurses, psychologists). There is a growing understanding of the important contribution that service users can make to developing the mental health practitioners of the future. Involving service users in the education of future mental health practitioners is seen as important in providing students with the opportunity for developing greater awareness and understanding through the unique insights of people’s lived experience of mental health conditions, and of their contact with mental health services. This paper describes the involvement of service user trainers in the development and delivery of a short training course in physical restraint for mental health professionals. It considers the impact of including service users who themselves have experience being restrained in acute mental health settings, from the perspective of course participants, tutors and the service user trainers themselves
