    Training for success: A guide for peer trainers

    [Excerpt] Training for Success: A Guide for Peer Trainers is a guide to help villagers, like you, teach others to operate a business like the one you operate. It was developed as part of the ILO project Alleviating Poverty through Peer Training (APPT). The project was designed to reduce poverty among people with disabilities in Cambodia by using village-based peer trainers to teach others. The purpose of this guide is to teach you, a possible peer trainer, how to teach others to replicate your business! The APPT project helped more than 950 people, mostly with disabilities, start businesses over a fi ve-year period. More than 200 peer trainers were involved. Many of the peer trainers also had disabilities. And, since the project paid special attention to women, most of the trainers and trainees were women, some with disabilities, some without. This guide was developed to help train peer trainers and is based on years of ILO experience. It was field-tested as part of a series of workshops for peer trainers conducted by the APPT project in the provinces of Siem Reap, Kompong Thom and Pursat in 2007. Training for Success: A Guide for Peer Trainers will be used by people like yourself who are already peer trainers or who want to start training others. Ideally, it should be used as part of a workshop that teaches you how to be a peer trainer

    Health trainers form part of a public policy initiative designed to tackle health inequalities. Health Trainers were first proposed in the White Paper ‘Choosing Health’ (2004) and initially some 1200 NHS accredited Health Trainers were placed in post, providing support in key Primary Care Trust areas with the most challenging health and deprivation indicators. The North West and East Midlands Health Trainer Hubs have developed initiative further within the Prison and National Probation Services with the production of a workbook to support prisoners in their attainment of the award. A team from Sheffield Hallam University were commissioned to conduct a brief consultation exercise to ensure that prison staff delivering the initiative, and prisoners who have completed the training in custody were given the opportunity to contribute to the design and content of the workbook

    Health trainers are health workers who offer one-to-one support to help individuals make changes to improve their health. The government regards health trainers as being an important mechanism to help tackle health inequalities through improving access to health advice, support and services in disadvantaged communities (Department of Health, 2005). As one of the 12 early adopter sites of the national health trainer programme, Bradford was one of the first places in the country to have health trainers working out in local communities. The early adopter phase was evaluated in 2006 to provide feedback on the development and functioning of the programme and any early outcomes. The evaluation findings indicated that the health trainer role was successful at supporting people to make changes to improve their health. Since the initial evaluation one significant development has been the piloting of the senior health trainer role. Three senior health trainers were recruited in November 2006 and placed in three localities, all areas of disadvantage. Their role was to support the work of health trainers on the ground and to use community development skills to improve access to the health trainer programme. At the time of the second evaluation there were 32 health trainers and 3 senior health trainers working in Bradford providing support to those individuals and communities with greatest health needs

    This is a report of a piolt study carried out among 155 general practitioner trainers in South East Thames region. Similar pilot studies have been carried out among trainers in four other regions on England. Separate reports have been prepared for each of the five regions, together with a summary report comparing the findings among the regions. The pilot studies were funded by the DHSS and carried out by staff of the Health Services Research Unit at the University of Kent at Camterbury

    A qualitative assessment of using lay trainers with type 2 diabetes in an intervention programme for people at risk of type 2 diabetes

    Objective: More knowledge is needed on the impact of expert patients within health intervention programmes. The University of East Anglia Impaired Fasting Glucose (UEA-IFG) feasibility programme was a structured dietary and exercise intervention to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in susceptible individuals. Lay volunteers with T2DM (T2 trainers) were recruited to support participants in adopting healthier lifestyles. This study aimed to explore the acceptability, perceived effectiveness and sustainability of lay trainers within the programme. Design: A qualitative focus group study. Setting: A clinical research unit in Norwich, United Kingdom (UK). Method: Focus groups were conducted with: (1) T2 trainers (n = 15); (2) programme participants who had received their support (n = 11); and (3) salaried staff facilitators who had worked alongside the T2 trainers (n = 3). Framework analysis was applied to identify the different experiences of the lay trainer role. Results: All groups perceived advantages for peer support, particularly in sharing the day-to-day experiences of living with T2DM. However, staff facilitators raised the importance of role boundaries, emphasizing that T2 trainers should not provide medical advice. Acceptability of T2 trainers was enhanced by contacting participants at a convenient time and before substantial lifestyle changes had been made. Conclusion: Lay trainers were seen as a complementary method to motivate individuals to reduce their risks of T2DM. A less prescriptive approach needs to be adopted to enable full integration of lay trainers, allowing them a greater level of contribution. To sustain effective use of lay trainers, health professionals need to work alongside volunteers and be trained to encourage peer involvement
