Trace elements in Antarctic meteorites: Weathering and genetic information

    Get PDF
Antarctic meteorite discoveries have created great scientific interest due to the large number of specimens recovered (approximately 7000) and because included are representatives of hitherto rare or unknown types. Antarctic meteorites are abundant because they have fallen over long periods and were preserved, transported, and concentrated by the ice sheets. The weathering effects on the Antarctic meteorites are described. Weathering effects of trace element contents of H5 chondrites were studied in detail. The results are examined. The properties of Antarctic finds and non-Antarctic falls are discussed

Trace element nutrition in the tropical zebu cattle type : lessons from the Gilgel Gibe catchment, Ethiopia

In the tropics, cattle are majorly dependent on natural pastures growing on poor soils and as a result prone to trace element deficiencies. This work investigated several aspects of trace element nutrition in zebu (Bos indicus) cattle, the most widely used cattle type in the tropics. Through several trials conducted at the Gilgel Gibe catchment, Ethiopia, we aimed to study factors influencing the flow of trace elements from soil to plant and grazing zebu cattle, and to investigate the impact of trace element status on health, production and trace elements in animal products. Overall, trace element, e.g., Cu, deficiencies were widely prevalent. Environment and certain grazing strategies were intimately related and affected trace element supply whereas cattle type affected trace element status. The effect of trace element status on trace elements in animal products was obvious, whereas the impact on health and production was less clear-cut. Potential effects of environmental change on mining wastes in a hyperarid climate

    Get PDF
Three desert washes were sampled to evaluate the transport of contaminated sediments from abandoned mining sites to downwash environments. The area of concern is an extreme arid climate considered stable and not to pose pathways for contaminated sediments to impact downwash environments. Research of mine wastes in Nelson, Nevada has shown that residual geogenic and anthropogenic trace elements have been mobilized in surface sediments as a result of storm event. Cyanide and trace elements, especially mercury and lead, have transported to 6000 m downwash from source areas. Short term environmental impacts appear to be minimal because of present-day environmental conditions. However, climate shifts caused by the El Nino Southern Oscillations or even a dramatic climate shift might increase regional precipitation promoting a more rapid erosion of contaminated sediment. Currently, wash sediments do not contain levels of CN- or trace elements that pose threats to the environment; however, if erosion and transport of mining waste increased because of additional precipitation, then CN- and trace elements loading in storm water would increase, with their possibly delivery to Lake Mohave

    Trace elements in healthy bones

Osteogenesis stimulation is one of the underinvestigated issues nowadays, as well as the topical problem of traumatology. One of the most important functions of the osseous tissue is depositing of macro- and microelements, due to this research on the skeleton ion profile is highly important to explain the osteogenesis physiological and reparative processes. As some microelements are involved into enzyme catalysis reactions, which are held in the osteogenic cells, so in case of their deficit or imbalance some processes are interrupted such as osteoblastic and osteoclastic differentiation, apatite crystallization process, cell-cell collaboration. These all cause physiological and reparative remodeling changes of bone. When you are citing the document, use the following link http://essuir.sumdu.edu.ua/handle/123456789/2750

Novel Technique for Ultra-sensitive Determination of Trace Elements in Organic Scintillators

    Get PDF
A technique based on neutron activation has been developed for an extremely high sensitivity analysis of trace elements in organic materials. Organic materials are sealed in plastic or high purity quartz and irradiated at the HFIR and MITR. The most volatile materials such as liquid scintillator (LS) are first preconcentrated by clean vacuum evaporation. Activities of interest are separated from side activities by acid digestion and ion exchange. The technique has been applied to study the liquid scintillator used in the KamLAND neutrino experiment. Detection limits of <2.4X10**-15 g 40K/g LS, <5.5X10**-15 g Th/g LS, and <8X10**-15 g U/g LS have been achieved.Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Nuclear Instruments and Methods

Temporal dynamic of trace elements in soils amended with contaminated organic wastes

Applications of so-called organic wastes are recommended in agriculture where the organic matter content of soil is low. However, before applying organic wastes to soil it is essential to assess that these materials do not pose any hazard to humans, animals, or to the environment. This study aims at evaluating the dynamic of trace elements in a soil amended with various organic wastes combining incubation and DGT techniques. Soil/waste samples were incubated to evaluate the impact of organic waste application on trace elements exchangeable fractions by exploring the DGT response. Organic wastes were incorporated at 80 t ha-1 of dry matter. During organic waste mineralization, we have detected increase in the exchangeable fractions of trace elements, which was more noticeable for Zn and Pb than for Cu, Cd, Ni and Cr. (Résumé d'auteur
